New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - April 11, 1991, New Braunfels, Texas Faldo taking aim at 3rd straight Masters win HeraldZiltung, New Braunfels, Texas Thursday, April ll, 1991 Page 9 AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — Can Nick Faldo, stronger and longer than at anytime in his career, become the master of The Masters with a third consecutive victory? Jack Nicklaus, a six-time champion, says "Yes," if the Englishman can beat him starting today as the 55th Masters was to get underway at the soggy Augusta National Golf Cub. "The most difficult win at The Masters is the first one," Nicklaus said. "The next time is always a heckuva lot easier." Nicklaus had the best chance to win three consecutive titles. He won the tournament in 1965 and 1966, but failed to make the cut in 1967. He still had to spend two days at Augusta waiting for the eventual champion, Gay Brewer, so he could observe the Masters’ tradition of passing along the green jacket. Nicklaus said he sees a Nicklaus confidence in Faldo's eye. "I think Faldo feels he is playing so well he can win and that’s how I used to feel," Nicklaus said. "He’s playing so well he probably doesn't even need his’A’game to win." Faldo, who had to trade in his Masters champion green jacket for one two sizes larger because of his offseason workouts that have added 15 yards to his drives, didn't pick Nicklaus as one of his primary foes. But Nicklaus, who last won in 1986, picked Nicklaus. No one ever has played better at the 6,906-yard, par-72 layout. "I wouldn't be surprised if I won," said Nicklaus, fresh off a Senior Tour victory at The Tradition. "In fact, I'll be disappointed if I don't win, and the last several years I wouldn't say that." Faldo didn't select Nicklaus as his primary worry although he said, "I'm sure anybody who has won here before has the edge over others." Ian Woosnam of Wales, Curtis Strange and Tom Tennis Continued from Page • the Unicorns’ lone representatives among the JV boys doubles teams, while playing in the girls division will be the team of Joleen Evans and Kim Sumbling, and the team of Stacey Pogue arui Jessica Manning. Jennifer Barnes will be New Braunfels' only entry in the freshmen girls singles division, while Ronny Chrisman and Jason Werth will compete in the boys division. The team of Derek Sollberger and Jason Moore will vie in freshmen boys doubles, while the team of Jennifer Voges and Amy Holtman, and the team of Holly Goerges and Susan Doherty, will compete in the freshmen girls doubles division. Fishing Continued from Page I added an old fisherman’s saying passed on to him by his grandfather to emphasize his point: “If you want to be happy for an hour, eat a good meal. If you want to be happy for a month, buy a new car. If you want to be happy for a year, buy a new house. But if you want to be happy all your life, learn to fish.” Thanks to the generosity of area bass fishermen, boats were provided for the students to fish from. Tournament sponsors were Rivercrest Drive In, Coca-Cola, HILB., Mrs. Baird’s Bread, the Canyon High School Booster Cub, and Walt Knieger of A.C.’s Place. Coach Hixon would like to thank Steve Lopez and all of the local bass fishermen who made the tournament possible. Faldo also didn't mention Spain's Jose-Maria Olazabal, World Series of Golf winner, or Greg Norman, mired in a slump and talking burnout. Norman, who hasn't won a major since the 1986 British Open, didn't show up until Tuesday. Normally, he comes in early. "I took some time off to get away," Norman said. "I was getting golfed out. I didn't want to play and it showed." Norman, who lost in the 1987 Masters when Larry Mize chipped in on the 11th green, didn't make the cut last year. Mize's victory was the last for an American in this tournament. "When a nuyor player gets down on himself that's about the time they win a tournament,” Nicklaus said.
