New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - April 9, 1991, New Braunfels, Texas Page 8Herakj-Zf/funy, New Braunfels, Texas Tuesday, April 9, 1991Brewers pickle Ryan, Rangers in opener By PALMER HAINES Spacial to (ha Harald-ZeJtung ARLINGTON — Rich “Goose” Gossage outpitched both President George Bush and Nolan Ryan Monday night, as the Rangers lost their season opener to Milwaukee, 5-4. The president bounced a one-hopper to the catcher during the ceremonial first pitch. Then Ryan struggled through seven full innings, giving up five earned runs on nine hits, including a 390-foot two-run homer to Robin Yount. He struck out nine while walking two and throwing I IO pitches. Gossage, who joined the Ranger bullpen the day before, came on in the eighth inning after John Barfield gave up a leadoff single to Franklin Stubbs. With the Rangers trailing 5-3, Gossage glared in at the batter. Suddenly, he wheeled and fired a pickoff throw Cougars_ American League Monday'! dames Detroit 6, New York 4 Boston e, Toronto 2 Chicago 0, Baltimore 1 Kansas City 4, Cleveland 2 Milwaukee 5, Texas 4 Today's Games Boston (Harris 13-0) at Toronto (Key 13-7), 6:35 pm Cleveland (Candiotti 15 11) at Kansas City (Boddicker 17-8), 7:35 p.m. California (Finley 18-9) at Seattle (Hanson 18 9),9 35p rn. Pinch runner Darryl Hamilton was called out on a close play. Gossage struck out the next two batters to end the inning and mark his debut as a Ranger. Texas pulled to within a run on Palmeiro’s one-out shot over the right-field wall in the bottom of the eighth. After reliever Mike Jeffcoat followed Gossage with a thrce-up, three-down ninth, the Ranger had a final chance to win the game when Mike Stanley reached first on an error by Brewer first baseman Greg Brock. After Steve Buechele bunted pinch runner Chad Kreuter to second, reliever Edwin Nunez struck out the final two Rangers to earn the save and preserve the win for Mark Knudson. Ryan’s troubles started early as speedster Paul Molitor beat out a slow-roller down the third-base line, stole second and scored on Gary Sheffield’s single. Stubbs then doubled Sheffield home to put Milwaukee on top, 2-0. In the second inning, Bill Spiers singled, s" Ie second and scored on Molitor’s & igle. But in the bottom of the inning, Rueben Sierra lashed a double to right-center and scored on Kevin Reimer’s homer. After Yount’s fifth-inning homer, Sierra hit a sixth-inning solo shot. Continued from Page 7 Smithson Valley went up 15-4 with fpur runs in the sixth, aided by two more Cougar errors. Herring’s double to the left-field comer scored Moreno, who had led off with a walk. ; Herring scored on a throwing error following a Staats bunt, then Ramsey Singled to right to drive in another run. LaRue’s bloop double to shallow right brought home Ramsey for the final ran. Canyon threatened to extend the game again in the bottom of the sixth, but came up a run short. Catcher Rodger Mack hit a one-out infield single despite a strong play by Long. The shortstop dived to his right to make the stop. then threw to first while sitting cm the ground. Schaas then reached on an infield ©TW — Smithson Valley’s third of the game — with a wild pitch by Belcher moving the runners up a base. LaRue went 3-for-5 to lead the team and raise his average to .558, while Ramsey was 2-for-4. Although it committed two errors in the third, the Ranger defense turned several outstanding plays, including Long’s play at short in the sixth. Matt Gawlik made a leaping catch and tag at first base on Canyon’s first at bat, and Moreno made a diving catch in left to end that inning. Brown said he was also pleased w ith his team’s opportunistic baserunning. “I thought we did a good job of picking up bases on their mistakes,” he said. The Rangers will take a lot of momentum into today’s 7 p.m. home game against Bastrop, Brown said. “They feel confident,” he said of his players. “We’ve scored in double digits all three district games, and that gives your pitchers some confidence.” Behrend said he was not displeased with the performances of his pitchers, saying defense was the main culprit in the loss. The Cougars will be at home again today, taking on Schertz Clemens at 7 p.m. Box score SMITHSON VALLEY ab r h bl Pnalza 2b 5 110 CANYON ab r h bl Rivers cl 2 10 0 22 23 Rmsey cf LaRue p Belcher c 4 0 1 Rrbchrcr 0 20 Gawlik 1b 5 1 1 Long ss Moreno ll Hermg3b 4 1 1 Staats rf 1 2 0 Totals 34 1511 3 1 1 1 Dallin rf Bueno ss Rdrigz 3b Wbfcht lf Mack c Ortiz cr Schaas p 3 0 0 Arnold p 1 0 0 2 12 1 3 0 10 3 0 0 2 0 0 3 0 I 0 1 0 Amrhn 1b 1 10 1 Torres 2b 3 10 0 Scoreboard On The Air TUESDAV 1 ’5 p.lr. — :ja£.«e*al Sit - ours a* Ch* cage WCN 6 3C p rn — the aa«.et»al kacj- t ea a' ^ittS&u'J* ES*** 635 p.r — Pro uasepal Los Vips-ies a' Atlanta "BS 730 p m — Pro basketball New York at Chicago WON 9 30 p rn — Pro baseball Minnesota al Oakland ESPN -lpm — P<-e hocker Pittsburgh al New Jersey tao* ama* USE WEDNESDAY 1 "15p rr. — f»rc baseball St coon at Chi cage WGA 63C p it, — Orc basehal: Sos tor at Tor ootc ES«>N 7 p it, — Pre basekthai: New ''on at Phi lader rife TAT ” 3( p rr. — Pre baseball Milwaukee at Texat KSE Local Sports TUESDAv 7 p rr. - Baseball Clemens at Canyon 7 p m — Baseball Bastrop ai Smithson VMey FRIDAY a i 5 p it — Baseball New Braunfels at Ha'iande* 7pm- Baseball Canyon al Lockhart 7pm — Baseball Smithson VaUey at Clamant TMURSO AV-FRIDAY Go* Distr id 25 SA tournament Seguin FRIDAY-SATURDAY Tennis District 25 5A tournament al New Braun leis Nigh School SATURDAY Track and liekl District 25 5A meet at New Br aor leis Dis Inc 126 AA meet at Lockhart Volleyball MB Woman’s Volleyball Association Co-Ed    W    L MRO'LAa    6    1 MR#* High Hie    6    2 Barry SUPS    4    5 Century Music    3    6 Maid    2    6 Freds Tear?    2    7 A League    W    I River cr es i Dove lr    13    1 Barry i UPS    12    2 AAA Ban Bonds    7    6 Total Fitness    4    t F Gang    2    IO Mute* Genutnt Drat    6    12 A League    W Spring Brandi Store    27 RAN Teas    22 New City bowery    22 Kl att MobMrta    2C Rarer ere*.
