Stocks NEW YORK (AP) — Morning stocks: Injured woman begins slow retreat from cave CARLSBAD, N.M. (AP) — A veteran spelunker known for her cave rescue expertise has begun a slow retreat inside the nation’s deepest known cave, where she suffered a broken leg during a weekend expedition. Emily Davis Mobley, 40, of Schoharie, N.Y., had been trapped about two miles inside the 54.3-mile-long Lechuguilla Cave after a rock gave way Sunday morning. She fell about 12 feet, and the 80-pound rock landed on her left leg below the knee. But late Monday with a splinted leg she began working her way slowly, horizontally toward the exit of the restrictcd-access cave four miles west of Carlsbad Caverns. “She’s moved a lot more than we thought she would,” said Carlsbad Caverns National Park Ranger Bill Justice. “For what we anticipated, she’s moved at a fairly rapid pace. She’s not moving at a rapid pace for a caver, but she’s moving at a rapid pace for a woman with a broken leg.” She will have to ascend nearly 1,000 feet, rescuers sa(d. And it might lake three days for Mobley to make her escape, alternating two types of stretchers moved by systems of ropes and pulleys, they said. “There arc a lot of drops she has to negotiate through and a lot of things she has to do, and we arc trying to do it as carefully as we can, so time is not important here,” Justice said. Rick Bridges, president of the Lechuguilla Cave Project Inc., said the 130-pound woman would have to be lifted straight up 150 feet at a point called Boulder Falls and pulled through what he described as narrow “squeeze ways.” “Just within 200 feet of the entrance there’s quite a number of obstacles to work her through,” he said. There’s also a precipitous, 65-foot ascent at Flow Stone Slope plus other drops of IO to 15 feet which rescuers plan to “leapfrog her over,” he said. He said the crews had rigged ropes, pulleys and mechanical devices in upper sections of the cave — not only for her but for rescue team members. Bridges said Mobley was an experienced cave rescuer herself and had participated in a recent spelunking rescue in New York stale.
