New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung (Newspaper) - February 14, 1991, New Braunfels, Texas Sports February 1991 New Texas Major Miner Mary Lou Erben watches her daughter Holly sign a letter of intent to play college volleyball at the University of Texas at El Photo by Erik Karlsson Miners sign NBs one of their top 2 recruits ByJOEBELK Staff Writer Holly Erben is making the jump from big time high school volleyball to big time college signing Wed nesday for ajlvejear athletic scho larship at the University of Texas at El a twoyear starter for the New Braunfels was a top recruit for as Coach Binny Canalcs said she was one of two play ers the Miners signed on the first national signing I visited the campus and liked it a It seems like a good and it has a good Erben I wasnt real scared to go away from home I wanted After playing in a highprofile Uni com program that was in tough 4A and 5A Erben finds herself in one of the most competitive college Canalcs said the Western Athletic which only incorporated volleyball a year is one of the two toughest conferences in the country along with the Big The WAC has four top 20 teams and a potential for with UTEP finishing 169 last who was a middle hitter for New said she will be play ing outside for the and has been working at her new position in junior league Holly has really made great strides in junior Canales She has been a fulltime volleyball player for the past few saying that the experience in league play helped her Ive gotten to see a lot Letter com she Its no secret that junior ball has a lot tougher She said most of the players are college with her Mary adding that the primary topic of conversation the past few weeks has been who is signing Erben said her high school years also helped her improve as a being the lead hitter on two Unicorn playoff It gave me mobility because I had to play the which is tougher because you have to move a lot quick Coach Claudia Perry is a good She said my freshman year that she didnt like you unless she yelled at She must have liked me a she I think Holly had a lot of leader ship skills her junior and senior probably her junior year as much as her Perry also rephras ing Erbens statement about yelling to say she pushed her because she was aware of her Erben said she enjoyed her senior year the because of the intense battle for the playoff spots between the East Central and New Braunfels beat East Cen tral on the road in the last district game to capture the runnerup That was just a she I liked that a lot better than knowing you were going to win Since she has seen the level of competition rise even more in junior and expects it to increase a few more notches in collegiate I am looking forward to the con its going to be she Canales said Erben may rcdshirt a if UTEP also signs some junior college I dont want to burn a year for her to get limited playing he I think shell be a lot more valuable as a fifthyear senior than as a first year Attitude the key for Unicorns But experience could help baseball team repeat as district champ ByJOEBELK Staff Writer With a large number of starters returning from last years District 284A the New Braunfels Unicorns are a confident baseball Now Coach Peter Garza is try ing to convince them that confidence alone wont win I was real high on what we had coming because we had a great number of starters and quite a few of the kids were returning Garza But right I feel like somehow or for lack for a better weve got a real bad case of Six starters return from last years and most of the players have at least some varsity Garza said the team has a lot of but must work to achieve They seem to think that theyre going to be good without having to work he That happens to young and it can happen easi ly because they all want to be These kids know they can be but theres a difference between that and being Were at the can but they think theyre already If we dont improve our attitude and work we wont get any better and we wont have the season we should have and would like to He said he believes the players can still have a strong but stresses that the time has arrived for them to work towards He said its possi ble a tough preseason schedule could shock the team into working That could be but its dumb to have to get slapped in the face to learn he I hate to throw a few games and our schedule is After the difficult preseason the Unicorns find themselves in a new classification and in which every team has the possibility to I think the district will have one big team to beat and the rest will prob ably be fairly Garza South San is definitely the team that will have the upper hand on every Thats a good indicator for everybody something to shoot The a perennial power for return seven starters from a team that Garza said finished a close third behind Holmes and John Jay last season in an extremely competitive The core of the returners is the which returns all four I think Harlandale and McCollum theyre right in the area where South San is all play the same kind of he explaining that those teams should all have a strong command of I think theyll all hit and play defense Seguin and San Marcos both lost some key and Garza said he didnt know much about East Central but respected the Hornets because of the caliber of athletes at their For the Unicom last years pitching rotation of Grant Hodges and Leroy Gonzales who combined for 18 of the teams 19 wins last year are as are two other pitchers with varsity Im expecting bigger and better from but hes already had some nagging injuries set him back a Garza said of the who has a sore its not a serious injury and its something he can work Hell have to work harder to get in shape and be as effec tive as he was last who was 102 last season as a has a healthy arm but needs to work on his He is also working to lose weight in order to improve his quickness and Right Leroy looks the best of the Garza But our schedule and our district are so all these guys are going to have to be better than they were last Lorenzo Garza is bigger and stronger than he was last He seems to be throwing the ball much When he his curveball is doing much he said of the lefthander Hes having problems with his con and hes going to have to work real hard on getting ahead in the Brian Martinez is the fourth Uni com and Garza said he has Schedule 1991 New Braunfels baseball Baseball 91 First in a series San East South Denotes District 255 A been working hard and concentrating But Martinez is also the teams starting and thus the pitcher he hopes to use the and primari ly in relief If those four can stay healthy and improve their we wont need anybody he said of the Those guys can carry us Completing the battery is returning catcher Greg who Garza said brings back experience and knowledge of the teams One thing we really need this year from him is improvement on he He has the potential of being a very good high school because hes got power and he makes good The Unicom infield consists of two returning and three players who saw varying degrees of varsity playing time last Martinez returns at shortstop as one of the teams stronger defensive He does a good job for us with the Garza Hes got quick hands and a strong Whenever hes Raoul Rom ero can slide Romero a capable athlete who is only in his second year of baseball as a senior is penciled in to start at second while returning starter Joe Faulkner moves over to Gar za said Faulkner has the versatility to play second or and Saucedo will also see some time at first when not on the Leroy who normally did not play on his off days last will this year play third when not Hes probably got the quickest hands on the team hes very confi dent and very comfortable over Garza and position playing has got to affect him but it affects some kids more than Hes one of those kids that would rather be playing all the And hes got a good enough bat that we need him on the field as much as Jason Lyssy is Gonzales backup at and either he or Faulkner play there when Gonzales is on the The outfield is the biggest question with only one returning starter and currently just four available Thats probably our biggest weakness and Garza The Unicorns do return Kyle Herman in left where he started last season as a I think hes doing a much better he Hes much more con fident this Wes who played some in right field last season before and after an is projected as the starting center Wes has good speed and a fair Garza He should be able to play the position Daniel Cantu was a starting outfiel der for the junior varsity last and he and Jacob Leos could both play in Isabell currently a starting guard for the basketball is an outfielder and pitcher who Garza believes can contribute to the baseball The addition of Bustos would make 13 players on the and Garza said plenty of room remains on the team for anyone who can New Braunfels returned several strong hitters from last years but the coach said in the first scrim mage hitting looked like the weakest part of the He said Gonzales and Overturf are all good and Saucedo other players have the ability to hit The he will nave to come as the poor team speed will be able to create many runs with out Thats always a New Braunfels has always been and this years no Weve got to utilize our bat skills to move people because were not going to do it Garza said he remains optimistic about the Unicorns chances for a suc cessful with the team contain ing many positive I think we cant do anything but get he I think weve got the to be right in the thick of things in if we can just find a way to get them to start playing to their Assault charge against Wingate dropped SAN ANTONIO AP A Bexar
