It may be the lull before the Desert Storm ground war begins — and with it the expectation of heavy allied casualties. But for most purposes, daily activity at the White House is settling back to its pre-war routine. Even the anti-war demonstrations outside have tapered off dramatically. From a crowd that swelled into the thousands in the days immediately after the war began Aug. 17, the protesters have declined to a handful on weekdays — about the same number as when there isn’t a war — and a dozen or so at the most last weekend. With most of the demonstrators Quayle to greet families, see missiles during Texas tour FORT BLISS, Texas (AP) — Schoolchildren and Army spouses will greet Vice President Dan Quayle during his visit to Fort Bliss today. Quayle was to briefly address family members of Fort Bliss soldiers deployed to the Persian Gulf and tour die Army’s Patriot missile training school during a two-hour stop in El Paso. About 12,000 soldiers from Fort Bliss arc participating Operation Desert Storm including the Patriot missile crews that have been nearly flawless in shooting down Iraqi Scud missiles. The visit, closed to the public, is part of a three-day jaunt to Southwestern military installations. Quayle also will visit with families at Camp Pendleton, Calif, and Luke Air Force Base near Phoenix Thursday and Friday. He also will tour a Tomahawk missile plant in San Diego. The trip is arranged around former President Reagan’s 80th birthday celebration, which Quayle was to attend in California tonight. Fort Bliss is the home of the 11th Air Defense Artillery Brigade and the U.S. Army Air Defense School. gone, the White House looks less like a fortress than it did a few weeks ago, when uniformed Secret Service officers in riot helmets stood along the fence. Bush, who was tense and pensive initially and stuck close to the White House, is coming out of his self- Comedian Danny Thomas dies at LOS ANGELES (AP) — Danny Thomas, called “America’s favorite television comedian’’ in the late 1950s and early ’60s, and the benefactor of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, died today. He was 77. Thomas was pronounced dead at Ccdars-Sinai Medical Center about a half hour after he suffered a heart attack at his Beverly Hills home, said hospital spokesman Ron Wise. Best known as the star of the popular television scries “Make Room for Daddy,” Thomas had appeared to be in good health and recently completed a tour promoting his new book, ‘‘Make Room for Danny,” said Norman Brokaw, chairman and chief executive officer of the William Morris Agency. "It’s hard to believe. He really wasn’t sick,’’ said Brokaw, Thomxs’ longtime agent. Bom Amos Jacobs in Deerfield, Mich., the comedian grew up in a large Lebanese family in Toledo, Ohio. "I was going to play nightclubs on the weekends, but I really thought I was going to be a character actor,” he recalled in 1986. Amos Jacobs was making a good living as a radio actor when he married Rose Marie Cassaniti in 1936. Their lives changed when Jacobs took a S50-a-wcck job as emcee at the Northsidc 5 IOO Club. He stayed three years, adopted a new name from brothers Danny and Thomas. He moved on to the prestigious Che/ Parec in Chicago, then national fame. imposed shell. "Good mood,” he declared at a picture-taking session the other day when asked about his frame of mind. On Monday, the president jogged for the first time in months in view of reporters, taking advantage of unseasonably warm weather. “No ‘Qs,’ no ‘As,’” he said, fending off questions as he jogged He also joked, holding up a "V” symbol and asking what it meant. “Victory?” “Peace?” reporters asked. No, the chief executive responded, it was how Julius Caesar ordered five beers. “V” is the Roman numeral for five. Bush has also been telling audiences jokes about his wife Barbara’s recuperation from her leg fracture in a sledding accident last month at Camp David, Md. "The tree is doing well,” he tells audiences. In the days right after the war began. Bush was not very humorous and seldom cracked jokes, aides said.
