New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - December 25, 1987, New Braunfels, Texas Religious Focus Page 10A    Herald-Zeitung    New    Braunfels.    Texas    Friday    [december,    5    "toLet the scriptures speak to you By FRIEDRICH REST Woodlawn Christian Church or hospitals. I wonder if I could be as cheerful as they, were I in their place Some people have been bedfast    When    I    was    a    student    assistant for years When calling on some    pastor at Salem Church, Kochester, people in nursing homes, residences N V . back in lbUtv I was in a homeAMERICAN SP CANCER i SOCIETY where a lady had been bedfast for 17 years On the way to her home I wondered what I would say to cheer her I still had a year to go at the seminary and this kind of thing had not been mentioned I w as ushered to her room and in a few moments, I was busy listening to her She had arthritis as I recall, but she talked of God s help through the years of her life Her faith sounded so much like St Paul's that I asked her if her favorite Bible verses were in St Paul s letters "No.” she said. "I enjoy the Psalms the most When I left the house I was think mg of the unity of faith in the Hid and New Testaments of the inspira tion of her life and the practical value of the Christian faith I'p to that visit. I wasn't com pletely sure that my decision to enter the ministry was the right choice I had thought serious of medicine But the great Physician had done more for her than what a medical doctor could have done A doctor can help mother nature to heal and or bear the physical burden of sickness And no one should downplay the role of the physician But if a minister can assist people to believe in God s pre sent help in time of trouble and to feel that nothing can separate us from his love, isn t he giving them something which no one can ever take away? At the risk of using language too familiar to be freshly meaningful. I sometimes think of a minister using words such as Lxiok as he points to God Let me explain, as he un folds the Scriptures. "Drink as he holds the cup and Mas God bless you aas you seek light and strength throughout the week as he lifts his hands in benediction BrieflyCandlelight service The New Braunfels Christian Church invites the public to a candlelight serv ice Christmas Kve at 7pm The New Braunfels Christian Church is at 7;i4 Ixnip TIT across from SummerwoodHoelscher Bu x kern per family to honor Sister Opportune Hoelcher Members of the Hoelscher Buxkemper Family will gather on Dec 27 to honor Sister Opportuna Hoelscher ('DP for her 'r*th birth day The gathering will tx- trom 2 to 4 p rn at Began Hall of < lur Lady ut th*-Lake Convent F vpeeled to attend are distant cousins from the local area and Sister Opportuna s nieces and nephews from Texas and from Kau sas She is the great granddaughter of Anton and Mary katherine Hot41 sc her who immigrated to Texas from Germany in 1K4B Call 144 722M or 4% 1.T84 for more informationSan Antonio Seminary announces registration San \ntonio seminary announces registration for the winter quarter which begins Jan ll Call the seminary office for addi ttonal information or an appointment at 14o 7k20 office hour>' are * to . a rn and I to I p rn Monday through See BRIEFS Page UA Ile it* ■ ft tm* \£a*U*4 Jaa/Lim* 204 W San Antonio 625-3241 WAL-MART 629-9121 IU 35 It ’n hi ut lr; Norris Insurance Agency 245 Landa    625-2316 BLUEBONNET NJ W BB AUN!
