New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - December 11, 1987, New Braunfels, Texas Religious Focus Friday December 11 1987 His church is corner, his altar is sidewalk PaflefiA    heia\d-Zettung New Braunfels Texas Ministerial Alliance__ Make an adventure out of Advent By REV. HAROLD ZIRKEL First United Methodist Church Last Sunday. Dec 6. was the second Sunday of Advent. This means that there are now only two Sundays before Christmas Day. Advent begins a new Christmas, or church year, preceding the 12 days of the Christmas season. Advent is the time of expectant preparation for the birth of Christ All of the preparations in which we are in voh ed during these days before Christmas should remind us of the way in which God prepared for the sending of His Son into the world A synonym for the word ‘’advent” is the word “arrival ” In the Advent Season, we remember the arrival of Jesus Christ into the world The long expec ted Messiah has entered into the world to become the savior of all persons who believe in Him This word, “advent”, is related in rootage to the word “adventure”. I have just checked the dictionary for the meaning of “adventure” and realize that two of the meanings help us to understand the coming of Christ into the world One of the meanings of adventure is a “remarkable, striking or stirring event ’ Certainly the coming of Christ into the world fits into this definition His coming is the most remarkable, the most striking and the most stirring event in all history So remarkable, striking and stirr mg was this birth of Jesus that all time is measured in reference to it The amazing thing is that His com mg into individual lives yet fits this definition When we accept Christ into our own lives, we discover that it is indeed a life-long adventure which transforms us. His coming is yet remarkable, striking and stirr mg The other definition of the word “adventure” also reminds us of realities associated with “advent’ the arrival of Christ This second definition of adventure is Kncoura mg risks hazards and jeopardy We remember that Jesus seemed to live on the edge of danger From the very moment He entered into his public ministry. He was sur rounded by those who sought his life Jesus died as a very young man upon a cruel cross He was willing to face the dangers to run the risks, to put his life in jeopardy all to fulfill the will of God In a very real sense our lives are to tx* lived as an adventure We must tx* willing to face the risks of what it means to be Christian in an unchristian world We also tx1 will mg to face the dangers to place our lives in jeopardy as we sivk to serve Him TI USA. Okla ( AP    Luke Williams is a big man with a big voice His church is a downtown street corner his altar a city sidewalk Kvery weekday hundreds of passers by unknowingly serve as his congregation as they hurriedly walk through the downtown Mam Mall on their lunch hour For 18 years, the Rev Luke as he likes to tx* called, has belted out his sermons on the corner of Fourth Street and Main Mall in a booming voice easily heard blocks away At 6? he rises about 5 each morn mg dresses in coat and tie and cat ches the 7 05 downtown bus from his north Tulsa home \fter a cafeteria breakfast he walks a few blocks to the courthouse to preach to lost souls accusal of v a nous crimes Much of his work also he says is “to make sure people get justice in the court " Four years ago.
