New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - November 11, 1987, New Braunfels, Texas Extension Focus Families grow stronger with time, appreciation By JULIE JOHNSON County Extension Agent Any family can grow closer, develop more cohesiveness and become stronger — given the time However, many families never develop the habit of spending time together and let their "family time" be taken up with other activities. While there is no ‘ money-back guarantee." research indicates that strong families share time together Strong families are the result of showing appreciation, concern, interest and love for all family members The special smile, an unexpected hug, the softly spoken words of love and appreciation are all important in making family members feel special It s especially important to start doing things together when the children are young Children soon realize that being a part of their family is fun They feel secure with family members and gradually learn that siblings and parents have much to share with them that enriches their lives Start the family time habit by tracking the family’s current activities Each day for seven days, write on the calendar the times family menders did things together You may wish to include the times you spent with one child alone, as well as entire family activities. including family meal time At the end of the week. when the family is together, look at the calendar Count up the time spent together and discuss what time was special for each family member Then begin to plan for family activities Spend some time talking about activities that would be fun and reasonable for the family to do together Make a family calendar for the month and place it where family members will see it daily and remember what is planned In addition to deciding on special activities, you may w ant to set aside a short period every day to do something as a family This time might be used for a family devotional, a reading of a special book together or playing a game or crafts Strong families work hard to plan and protect the time they spend together The week of Thanksgiving has been designated at National Family Week Throughout November the Comal County Extension Service will focus on the family, its needs and strengths Education programs conducted bs the Texas Agricultural Extension Service serve people of all ages regardless of socioeconomic level, race, color, sex, religion, handicap or national origin Group pushing high school drama CINCINNATI (AF» The International Thespian Society is expanding its efforts to ensure that the curtain doesn't fall on drama education in the nation’s high schools The organization, with 2.500 affiliated dramatic troupes at high schools in the United States. Canada. Japan and New Zealand, is try ing to extend its programs afield to improve the scholastic teaching of drama The aim is to ensure that today’s youth will maintain interest and par ticipation in drama, said Bob Bruder Mattson, director of development for the International Thespian Soc iety "The high school drama student of today is going to be the drama au dience of tomorrow,’ he said in an rn temew “It s part of a well rounded education. You learn a lot about yourself and you learn about com municatmg. and that’s an essential part of today’s society " The Cincinnati-based organization hired Bruder Mattson to oversee an effort to raise funds for a new pro gram to sponsor training of drama teachers The organization wants to do its part to encourage school systems to hire trained, certified drama teachers. Bruder Mattson said He said 21 states now have some type of certification requirement for drama teachers, and the thespian society wants to increase that to a na tionwide mandate “The American Theater Association was involved in working w ith the teachers, so we stayed out of it But last year, that organization folded Bruder Mattson said We see a need there and so we want to step in and meet that need " In addition his non profit organza tion also hopes to expand its program for awarding drama scholarships to students It now offers seven scholar ships of $2,UUU each per year for post secondary education in drama train Alicia G. ENGLERTH District Conservationist Native grass pastures which have been properly managed during the fall growing season still are useful for winter grazing With a protein supplement provided along with the dry native grass at this time. pastures can sometimes bridge the gap during a drought or winter without severly reducing cattie numbers. The native grasses are very valuable when you think of the possibility of having to feed cattle high priced hay during a drought period or w inter season as a result of range being lost to a range fire Therefore a firebreak is an impor tant conservation practice in the grassland area which should be con sidered at the present A firebreak usually is a man made barrier designed to check or stop fires on rangeland Firebreaks also are designed to control fires in a prescribed bum as a means of brush control The firebreak is to protect the soil and plant resources by redo ing or preventing damage to plant cover by a w ildfire Firebreaks should tx* planned and installed along state and county roads on the landowner’s property so one can control the maintenance of the firebreak The practice should not be const meted on slopes w here water will concentrate and create an erosion hazard Construct the firebreak on the contour as near as conditions will permit to prevent em sion A firebreak should have at least a 10-foot wide area clear of all vegetation Vegetation can be remov ed by use of a dozer motorgrader disk plows or heavy disk harrow to uproot all vegetation The firebreak should be maintain ed each year especially during dry periods and winter season when the grass is dry enough to burn Where pastures are large and woody, it may be necessary to divide the pasture by providing a firebreak through the middle or across the pasture A grad eit farm access road property ligated also can ser\ e as a firebreak Ranchers in the Comal -Guadalupe Soil and Water Conservation District should consider the advantages of a firebreak to prevent grass fires from destroying valuable grassland which is needed during drought periods Many ranchers in the local area are using and maintaining some type of firebreak on their ranch either to control wildfires or to use a prescnb ed bum to control brush at the proper time If ranchers were forced to feed oik* cow for three months, it would take 2.700 pounds of hay just to maintain the cow Therefore curred native grass in the pasture means getting a herd of cattle through a drought period or w inter economically Most grass fire" are started by careless buring of trash or brush and cigarettes being thrown from automobiles If it is necessary to bum trash or brush build a firebreak around it anil then burn only when the win velocity is low and moisture conditions are good For further information on eon st meting firebreaks or planning a prescribed hum contact your lo* al Solid Conservation Serv ice Field ut flee at T58 banda St Room i in the Cark Mall Building or callid) ad I mg but wants to expand those to $10,000 scholarships.
