New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - October 16, 1987, New Braunfels, Texas Religious Focus Page 6A Herald-Zeitung New Braunfels. Texas Friday October 16. 1987Ministerial Alliance The almighty power of God By RAYMOND REICH Cross Lutheran Church When we think of the power of God. we have every reason to run and try to hide behind some bushes with Adam. By His word God sustains us We would not draw a breath or blink an eyelash if God would take His power from us. And yet. what do we do with this power that God gives us9 We use it like prodigals We use it to run away from God and waste God’s gifts in a far country. When we come to ourselves, we see where we end up if we are no longer at home with God as our Father Then we realize that we are not worthy to be called His sons Then we see our sufferings and our troubles as our just dessert. They are our punishment because we have used the power of God to mock Him who will not be mocked. There is that power of God. to be sure. Everyone who is alive lives by that power of God, and it will be by that power that God will bring everything to an end That is the almighty power of God. which means God as He is in Himself. But there is another power of God which is revealed to us in the Gospel and that is God’s power unto salvation to everyone who has faith That is the power of God by which He makes us powerful to overcome everything that would destroy us by separating us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord Briefly The gospel tells us the good news that we could not accomplish by ourselves God has accomplished for us in Christ Jesus We could never rid ourselves of the sins which put us under the power of God. that can only destroy us But the good news from God tells us that the blood of Jesus Christ. God’s son. cleanses us from all sin. We could never overcome the death which always claims the final victory over the worst of us and the best of us But the good news from God tells us that Jesus Christ rose again from the dead and thereby made Himself our Lord, whether we live or die Whoever believes this gospel shall not perish but have everlasting lifeMethodists to have open house The members of First United Methodist Church will have an open house Oct. 25 from 2 to 4 p rn to give others in the community an opportunity to see the new buildings.
