New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - October 14, 1987, New Braunfels, Texas Commerce & Industry Wednesday October 14 1987    Hera\d-Zeitung    New    Braunfels.    Texas     -"age Texas Business Today Tax increase ahead in 1988 By MAR Y SCOTT NABERS Texas Employment Commission Dear Commissioner Sabers I have really been struggling during these tough economic times Often I though I might have to close the doors on my business and walk away Maybe I am over the hump at least I hope so but today I started wondering what my 1988 unemploy ment tax rate would be can you give me anv idea of what to expect'1 T J Dalhart Dear T J I have been hearing from hundreds of employers in exact Iv the same situation I wish the news I have to give you could be better but here goes There are two substantial law changes made by the last legislature which will affect employers beginning in 1988 First there was a change made in the method of computing the deficit tax The deficit tax is one portion of an employers overall unemplov ment tax rate Previously because of the computation formula the deficit tax affected less than half of all employers Now it will affect all employers Second the wage base upon which an employ er pays taxes has been in creased from $7 OOO to $8 OOO in 1988 and $9 OOO in 1989 In a nutshell taxes will increase In 1988 the minimum rate available under law is expected to approach I percent, and the maximum rate is expected to be about 8 5 percent I am advising ail employers to prepare for a tax increase but those who did not pay anc deficit tax last year will be the ones to take the biggest hit Dear Commissioner Nabers Is there anything we as employers can do to lighten our tax burden for 1988'1 S J Lubbock Dear S J The 0 8 percent FL TA Federal Inemployment Tax Act tax is due to decrease to 0 6 percent as of Jan I 1988 The additional u 2 percent was imposed in 1977 to pay for extended unemployment benefit'-authorized by the federal govern ment The House and Senate commutes in the I S Cpngress have included among the opentions considered in writing a tax bill the extension of this tax Since the purpose for which it was imposed has been satisfied we think the extension would be a new tax which you as employers have every right to protest The extension will cost the employers of Texas approximately $89 million in 1988 or about $14 per employer Write to your U.S. Congressmen and Senators now stating your objec tion The next two weeks are the crucial ones as far as this tax is concerned Sabers represents 336 OOO employers throughout Texas If you ha\e any questions write her at Texas Business Today 614 Texas Employment Commission Building. 15th and Congress.
