It can be honestly stated that tilt* only pails (»l Hie operator s anatomy that ate immobile ate bet feet and bet seat' I he un ige most people have of McKenna's switchboard operators is fat from reality fun job involves a lot mote titan inst pushing buttons Remember the last tint* you bad a family emergency and you needed vein doe lot after office hours oi on a Acekend Ret von didn * know that thr* very same operator who answers your calls to the hospital, also answets the medical exchange phone Maintaining the medical ex change is a very big part of our job We are responsible for keeping a current daily schedule of the whereabouts of your doctor and other medical staff who are on call ” We know where your doctor is and or how he or she can be reached at all tunes It is the responsibility of the operators to make certain the emergency loom staff also has tins information In older to expedite your request for your doctor we maintain a quail t v functioning pager system foi those times when your doctor is out of touch or not at home and is carrying his or her pager lf you have ever walked past out off ice af McKenna you will likely wonder why we always seem so busy, and why we always seem to fie hiding under a pile of paperwork I here is a wealth of information in our office in various forms We have at our disposal and for your well being two computers and two large wall panels Ute main computer contains [ta Rent and doctor and medical staff in formation and is continually updated vo the information you request, or our staff needs, is readily available I he second computer is solely for the fire alarm system Should a fire ot smoke alarm he triggered anywhere in the hospital, one glance at nm computer will tell us exactly where the alar in is coming from I hen it is out lob to notify the pro per persons immediately, and to put into effect the emergency procedures required These procedures are reviewed on a regular basis There is a little known fact you perhaps are not aware of In the event a fire or disaster should occur at McKenna. the switchboard operators must stay at their communications network un til we are directed to leave the building by the police department A good deal of the information in our office is current, updated in formation about other medical care facilities and services in the area which are available to the public you the patient lf we were to crowd any more information into our Rolodex we might have to look for larger quarters or at least a much larger Rolodex In spite of this wealth of informa tion. we still encounter from time to time, a question we can’t answer Rest assured we will find the answer for you, and for us so we can continue to give better service to the public the patients and the medical staff The communications coordinator schedules regular iii services lor the purpose ut educating the hospital staff on the proper use of the telephone system at McKenna She also schedules regular meeting for her operators in ordet to keep us in formed of anv and all changes peru nent to our jobs and aimed at making us the best we can be at what we do The switchboard is open from 7 a.rn until 11:30 pm seven days a week As McKenna grows we find the need for 24 hour continual service just may be in our future The shift from 7 a rn until 3:30 pm is con st ant Iv busy as the hospital is a beehive of activity at that time From 3 30 pm until 11:30 pm the need becomes more of a con tinuous search for personnel as this is the time when the medical exchange becomes very active and we are seeking the proper doctors on call Also during this time. where there is a temporary lull in the action, the operator is in charge of mailing all the correspondence for that day Sometimes, this can be a real test of agility, as it means running the postage machine, while also answer mg the switchboard and medical ex change,and all the usual activities There is a rewarding and exciting job To know our being there may have given someone a smile may have helped a patient reach a loved one yes may even have helped to save a life The duties of an operator can be stressful, if we let them be or they can be most satisfying in the knowledge that we are involved in the mainstream of McKenna Hospital life and that ours is an important and fulfilling task 68 S SENIOR CITIZEN DISCOUNT Call our Circulation Department for daily home delivery 625 9144 f.
