New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - March 4, 1987, New Braunfels, Texas Guest ColumnRoyko, Rooney unrighteous in columns on religious subjects •y REV. DICK OLNEY Foursquare Gospel Church First Stone Mr Rooney and Mr Royko have both taken on the task of passing off false doctrine on the public Their knowledge of theology is close to zip. let alone erroneous These "writing giants' stepped into an arena they have no business being in In fairness to the public who read their columns and admire their style, please beware of the public forum they use to pass off ideas that are not consistent with truth, or the Spirit of God I will not in one attempt try and hit these media giants with one blow, but it might take me all five stones, if the opportunity remains open for comment I take public speaking as a privilege and with it the responsibility to help people with truth and lead them to a conviction that results in commitment and belief in God. and also to stand against unrighteousness, in whomever parades it as fact or example Addressing first Mr Roykos theology on Oral Roberts and his death converting more atheists and agnostics in his death than life A Seeing is not believing' I Both history and the present are full of examples that would prove Mr Roy ko w rung a I-et v take a scenic trip today to Turkey and Mt. Arafat. There you would find an Ark But I assure you. so what7 Would you repent because you saw it? Do you have any idea what the Ark means9 b We also could journey to Jerusalem There is a tomb which is empty You can look into it if you wish Easter is an established fact and holiday, yet agnostics and atheists go on like it isn t important They still are not converted though they can see The single most important event for all of mankind, a proven fact, and still zip in the majority 2 No Mr Royko. men are not converted through seeing, but the Bible says. "For we walk by faith, not by sight " 3 No Mr Royko ask the atheists and agnostics who finally laid down their unbelief through the preaching of the man of God. Oral Roberts, if seeing is believing0 4 Romans. Chapter IO. asks this question How shall they believe on him. in whom they have not heard9 Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God Men are converted through behev mg that Jesus Christ died for their sms and took their place on the cross and repenting and asking forgiveness and for no other reason Oral Roberts death or life serves no i»ne And without doubt, Oral Roberts deserves honor for his ser vice to God and mankind May it be on your gravestone that you were as fruitful Second Stone Mr. Rooney, in his article on Sunday, March I. stated that he believed that God. if given another chance to write the Bible, would change some things, including "that line in Genesis where he was quoted as saying. Re fruitful and multiply and replenish the earth ’ " Mr Rooney has some severe problems with his so-called theology 1 God is not a man that He should lie It is hardly believable that the wisdom of Rooney was counseling God when He wrote the book. Yes. Mr Rooney. God wrote the book! He is its author 2 Unlike Mr Rooney's reporters and their carelessness. God said He used Holy men of God as they were moved by the Holy Spirit ." Because of the eternal importance of the truth and whether a man goes to heaven or hell. He wrote the book so that you could believe and trust every word Unlike the news media. God can be trusted and is completely and perfectly dependable 3 The folly of saying that situa tional ethics, and being relevent is a problem that God has is absurd' The Bible as those who believe know, is as relevent today as when it was authored It met the needs of men then just as it does today Jesus is alive today sustaining this "one of a kind book with power only to those that believe " TTH* Bible says For the preaching Public smoking ban debated, bill is now before full Senate AUSTIN AP \ tiill to restrict -.Hulking in public won senate committee approval after one of several health professionals supporting the measure described smoking as slow motion suicide Sen I bet Brooks ppvposed Texas smoke I- rec Indoor kit Act WUU I ii prohibit smoking rn public places and at public meetings except in designated smoking areas The Health amt Human Resources Committee sent the bill to the full senate on a Sa) vote Tuesday VSe re trying to do basically one thing and one thing only amt that is to recognize the rights of smokers as welt as non smokers said Brooks I v Pasadena His bill would require designated smoking areas ex cepl in bars Mhacco stores ami restaurants with a seating capacity of customers or less where the en tire area could br (or smoking The law lf enacted would tw enforced against the proprietor not the smoker with fines of up to IJH) state law already prohibits smoking in certain spec if lei! areas such as elevators public st blinis amt en. loses! mov ie Pleaters Che American t amer vxirtv amt its 166 m»> volunteers American Heart Association \mcrican l-ung Assoc*tat ion Texas t am er Council amt state health department supported Brooks bb. Main •©•me, TX of the cross is to them that perish foolishness, but unto us which are saved, it is the power of God." I Cor I 18 4. Mr. Rooney's problem with overpopulation ethics does. I might add, serve the purposes of the religion called "humanism," for justifying abortion, sterilization, infanticide, and euthanasia; however, it is totally contrary to the real facts The city of Jacksonville. Fla , contains 841 square miles Each square mile contains 27,878,400 square feet Figuring a world population at four and one half billion people, and allowing 2.6 square feet for every man. woman and child, every person in the world could stand shoulder to shoulder In just one half of Jacksonville. Fla Also as a point of interest, it s apparent that Mr. Rooney hasn’t made a trip west of the Mississippi River or to West Texas. It's also a fallacy that the greater the population, the lower standard of living Case in point Japan has a population density of 798 people per square mile, yet they have a higher per capita GNP than India which has 511 people per square mile $4,450 versus $140 dollars "India's food problems are do to its religions, not its ability to produce There are 200 million Sacred Cows in India Every cow eats enough food to feed seven people That's one billion, four hundred million people One fourth of the world's entire popula Hon " No. Mr Rooney. God will not change His word to help you explain life and your lack of understanding But. he will open your eyes and heart if you honestly seek him and believe that He is the only "know-it-all" that ever existed or will exist He has declared in His immutable word that "Forever. O Lord. thy word is settled in heaven ” Psalm 119:89 God never had to rethink what he said, nor ever will, for He is God alone Be fruitful and multiply is still good and is still God s plan Stop supporting those who want it snuffed out and limited to their brand of society We have heard and seen the results of that kind of thinking before, in a land called Germany EDITOR'S NOTE Rev Olney in dicates he will supply three additional “stones" in response to views contained in Mike Royko's and Andy Rooney's syndicated columns While these additional commentaries are not in hand at this printing. when they are they will appear in the same Guest Column format as timely as possible Oral Roberts steps up appeal as God's deadline draws near TULSA. Okla (AP* — Evangelist Oral Roberts, apparently in the final stages of raising the $8 million he says he needs to preserve his life, is stepping up his appeal to followers for donations before the end of March Roberts' supporters have begun a countdown to March 31, the deadline the 69-year-old evangelist said God had set for completing the drive to fund medical missionary scholar ships Roberts said in a letter to followers last week that he still needs $1 5 million In January Roberts said he needed $4 5 million Roberts' son Richard told viewers of his daily television program Tues day • You can be a part of helping to bring in this final million and a half Step to your telephone right now We are so close Will you help us go over the top0 For two months Roberts has been derided by some for his assertion that God told him to complete the fund raising by the end of March or forfeit his life "If Oral says that is what happen cd. then Oral is either one of two things." the Rev John Wolf, minister of .All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, told his congregation Sunday • He is a liar or he is crazy Either way. it s a bum rap for Christianity Roberts wrote followers last week that he intends to ascend into the futuristic prayer tower at the center of the Oral Roberts University cam pus on March 22 to pray and fast until * victory comes or God calls me home ” Bob Vander Lugt president of the university Student Association said most students have been supportive of Roberts though they keep a critical distance" from the evangelist s assertions He said a few students believe Roberts’ approach is outright manipulation and others think criticism from outside "is an attack on Oral "I think you can find most of them in between, wanting to understand." Vander Lugt said He s always making very bold statements " said Linda Hopkins. editor of the university student newspaper The Oracle "He doesn’t make half-hearted statements He never has I think the students overall are very enthusiastic about medical missions I like to be identified with that mission ” I announced it in March last year and nobody paid any attention to me I believe they re paying attention to me now Roberts said on his son s television program "Richard Roberts Live broadcast Tuesday Roberts said he is hurt by those who say his remarks are a fund raising ploy Some television stations that broadcast Roberts’ program have refused to run the shows that mention the deadline I think that the biggest hurt that I have had is not the news media, though anybody in their right mind knows how that stings but to fail Jesus Roberts said W hen N .rn W ish I pun ,i star Mar til -ai.I Jress is up to tin* irxiiv idual Th** smith^m Valley High School Balut has a return engagement Martin said The New Br aunfels High situ*. < noir and Hie seele F.lemen tory *>cIxjoI German Dancers also are set to perform Martin said the response from U* al nursing homes has tieen great NBlsD will tie providing transporta don for senior citizens from nursing homes I FRIGIDAIRE HEAVY DUTY t LAUNDRY PAIR s^^ ONLY ^ S49900 Fngidaire \  x New Euro!lair Range 4r/A LIMITED AL QUANTITIES lire , " r    • £»*'* eg* • .V • -.1. n. :«• -vc s ,v*~ eg* -v--> ’■ Aai* R. sr rftp# j'w .'.i S • ■ . ais I**1 I'rS £•*'» .eg* Doxy Op#*■it, F '■* Mr-' pf* Aas*1 LIMITED TIME ONLY! • Elegant Elite Styling • Electri-Saver Switch • Fngidaire Electri-Saver Loop • Optional Automatic Ice Maker • Textured Steel Reversa-Doors • Unwrapped Food Drawer • Cantilever Tinted Glass Shelves • Meat Tender Drawer • Just-a-bm Door Shelves Features listed on illustrated model Delivery Extra PRICES OPTIONAL WITH PEALER \Ay Vl L l ^ A /* rn • • ISS N*- "ca Frigidaire^ - FRIGIDAIRE REFRIGERATOR-FREEZER But Hurry.
