New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung (Newspaper) - February 22, 1987, New Braunfels, Texas Opinions Dave Editor and Publisher Jim Managing Editor New Texas February Editorial NBISD board teaching unique kind off lesson It would be easy to criticize New Braunfels Independent School Board of Trustees over their expulsion of 12 students under their revised disciplinary management It would be correct to say drugs are a bigger problem in sheer numbers in larger school districts and as with the murder rate in New a few bad apples can make more of the barrel look after are supposed to provide the opportunity for education to all Texas Kicking them out of school doesnt do even carrying a weapon were reasons for expelling middle through high school level There is a greater good to be served here in that the examples made of these former students will discourage similar behavior from the current students who might consider doing the same thing and to protect those who wouldnt misbehave in the first Cant argue with Peer of would be the most effective way to curb drugs and inappropriate behavior in our And some students have succeeded in getting the message out that people who go to a party intending to get so messed up they cant leave safely are not NBISDs trustees are reinforcing the sentiment by acting as the partys Its their right to do Will the expelled students fare well out of school How many of them will go somewhere perhaps at greater ex pense to their families Will drug use disappear from NBISD campuses as a result of strict enforcement Lets hope At least 12 people have been denied their right to an education for violating wellpublicized school If nothing maybe something unusual will happen students will pay more attention to the school board and their adult lives will be less of a Forum LETTER POLICY The HeraldZeitung welcomes All letters should be sign ed and include an address or telephone The newspaper reserves the right
