The shift has built up like a wave, with one mainline church after another — now totalling three — recently taking steps toward transferring their bases to the middle part of the country. Others may yet join the migration away from the East. “It seems to be partly tied In with a yen to get closer to the grass roots, closer to the needs and attitudes of ordinary members,” says James M. Wall, editor of the biweekly Christian Century, published in Chicago. He says past concentration of denominational headquarters in the East “has been a mistake, giving them a distorted view of the country.” The move west “is long overdue,” he adds, aligning them with more typical environments. Lemmons will speak to adult Bible study classes at 9 a rn. and at the worship service at IO a m. His subjects will be world evangelism and the Bible correspondence ministry. He has been involved in missionary work for many years, founding the Pan American Lectureship in 1962 and directing it for 20 years. He founded a similar European lectureship in 1976. He is director of World Bible School with more than I million correspondence students and more than 60,000 recorded baptisms each year. Lemmons was editor of the Firm Foundation Christian newspaper for 29 yeras and has served on the staff of the 20th Century Christian. He is now an editorial writer for the Christian Chronicie and editor of two journals, Image and Action He is author of Abundant Living and The King and His Kmgdowm. He edited two hymn books and still conducts the Foundation School of Music which he founded 20 years ago at Reuel Lemmons Hensel, near Austin. He serves on the board of trustees of Abilene Christian University and the board of regents of Pepperdine University and Korea Christian College He is an elder in the Westover Hills Church of Christ in Austin.
