darkest moments of New Braunfels 1985 football season turned into some of the Potential disaster Victor Sierras broken an injury that sidelined the allstate candidate from the second district game to the first round of the Resolution The Unicorns pulled That was really about the time we started coming together as a Coach Jim Streety The guys said they still had to get it and they Potential disaster Losing a fum ble on the Unicorn 37 late in the third quarter of the game with Gregory then missing a pass for two points after pulling within one point at 2120 in the fourth Resolution An 85yard touchdown drive that may become the most famous march in Unicorn football New Braunfels con verted two longyardage situations and two fourth downs on the That typified the kind of team we Streety Potential disaster Whipping the states 1ranked team in the state everywhere except the Scoreboard in the state Resolution Good impressions on enough college scouts to earn New Braunfels players as many as half a dozen college New Braunfels started the 1985 season standing out for all to The Unicorns were picked by just about everyone to win the and one publication picked the team to win the region as But nothing is as easy as it sounds in The Unicorns had to build a defense without a lot of and they had to put together an offen sive Having Mike who has been called one of the four best high school linemen in the helped on both sides of the Sullivan led the offensive line as it matured and learned to play and be helped the defense turn into one of New Several players who came football season Unicorns 13 Travis 12 In a typical New Braunfels the defense rattled but didnt fall apart and the offense And as he would several times during the Stephen Millett came up with the big play in this a kickoff return for a touchdown to win the game with less than two minutes left in the fourth Unicorns 21 Seguin 8 In what Coach Jim Streety called the Unicorns best game of the nondistrict New Braunfels drove 80 yards twice in the first half to subdue the who didnt score until late in the game after pummelling Clemens the week It was a lot better from the first game to the second Streety Unicorns 35 Gonzales 0 Gonzales came out with a new offense and a new throwing the Unicorns for a loop in the first After halftime New Braunfels scored 20 points in the third Barry Baker helped blunt Gonzales wideopen passing attack by intercepting four Uniporns 27 Alamo Heights 18 An offagain performance on the road was probably a carryover from the good per formances the previous two We played well most of the but not Streety We still werent there yet in the offensive Unicorns 35 Clemens 8 Quarterback Victor Sierra came into his own against the who committed themselves to stopping Sierra threw for 252 yards and three including 151 yards to Leon This was about the time I thought we started approaching what I thought we could Stroety New Braunfels completed its third straight undefeated nondistrict schedule with the Unicorns 32 Lockhart 0 New Braunfels exploded into the district season by running up and down the field on the Lions and bottling up tailback Robert Our defense was really fired and they played exceptionally Streety Unicorns 33 Canyon 14 The Unicorns avenged their only regular season loss of 1984 by taking a 270 halftime lead with a relentless Sierra went down with a broken collarbone late in the first After the Cougars rallied for two touchdowns in the second Millett killed the rally with a kickoff return for a Until Victor got that was the best game we played in Streety This was a game we had pointed to in oui because we felt it was going to be us and Canyon going to the playoffs and if we were going to be district we had to be Unicorns 20 Kerrville Tivy 0 New Braunfels snapped back after the emotional Canyon game with a solid performance on a cold Backup quarterback Alan Matney performed admirably in the poor con and the Unicorn defense had the Antlers in a strangehold all Beginning with the Kerrville we got a little more conservative on Streety But our defense got more They shut out and did a great job on Unicorns 34 Fredericksburg 8 The Billies passing game came right at the but New Braunfels marched the ball at will on Fredericksburgs The Unicorns gained 31 yards on the ground and the defense allowed only The victory clinched the Place playoff berth and gave Stieety his 100th career Unicorns 19 Hays 16 New flat after clinching as playoff berth the week struggled against the firedup They got a couple of touch downs on turnovers and Hays played Streety We had to fight to win this The outcome wasnt clinched until the games final Unicorns 45 Uvalde 14 Just about everything went right and by design as the Unicorns swamped the unbeaten We were scared to and that had a lot to do with the way we Streety We didnt know if we could make a first much less But the defense came up with the big as Damon Millett returned a fumble 45 yards for a and it was off to the New Braunfels led 247 at the Unicorns 28 GregoryPortland 21 In what will be called The Drive for years to New Braunfels marched 85 yards in 16 plays in the founh quarter to beat the I think that drive against GregoryPortland was probably one of the more impressive things thats happened since Ive been Streety Its something well remember for a long Millett gained 215 yards for the second of three 200plusyards game in the Unicorns 27 Calallen 10 Drained by the emotional impact of the GregoryPortland the Unicorns fell behind 100 in the first against the I dont think revenge is a good idea in the because if you get even with one guy youve got somebody else the next Streety But New Braunfels regained its took advantage of some breaks and took control of the game with an 87yard drive in the third Millett gained 201 yards and scored three Tomball 32 Unicorns 21 New Braunfels dominated the game in every category except one the Tom balls allstate halfback Bubba Greely and quarterback Lance were overshadowed by Millett and But a long interception return changed the momentum of the game in the third and the season ended on the chilly day in varsity experience turned into all district Cody came through at linebacker when we needed and be bad a spectacular Streety Keith Cook came through in the defensive line and he played like gangbusters from August to Defense became a bard deep That depth showed during the season when a knee injury limited Sullivan to offense and when tackles Dicky Ortega and Eric Rivers were hurt and couldnt and it also showed in the way New Braunfels could run fresh linebackers into the game at On the story was the offen sive As Darrin Larry Longoria and Billy Lyt ton started to play as a the of fense got A big chunk of the offense came from Stephen who broke the school record for yardage in one season and had three games of more than 200 yards despite not playing in the fourth quarter but twice until the Sierras injury spoiled what was going to be an outstanding but it also showed what kind of team New Braunfels If you had told me in August that Sierra would go down for three and threequarters of the district season and wed still go 130 going into the state I would have said you were Streety But behind junior Alan the finished the season undefeated and barely Matney will lead a different look ing New Braunfels team in There wont be any Milletts on the for There are wont be Sullivan or Sierra or there will be Lots of Weve got our entire second team offensive line coming Streety And some good Lettermen in the crucial offensive line are Paul who played center in the Calallen playoff game Chris Joe Mark Shafer and Brett From the junior the Unicorns will col lect a group of 200pounders for the offensive and defensive lines as That group includes Vance Donald Stephen Michael Jeff Tommy Kiesling and Paul New Braunfels will have some ex perience in the skill positions as with tailback Eric fullback Ryan tight end Stacy Warner and receivers Leon Kevin Walker and Tim Zipp Schroeder gained 357 yards this season playing behind On linebackers Purdy and Chet Fenner are as is free safety
