Antonio Mayor Henry Cisneros has stirred up talk of a regional airport to serve San Antonio and saying it would be instantaneous justification for economic growth along Interstate 35 between the It would make the corridor a justifiable trading region in the eyes of the Cisneros His remarks came Tuesday in a Chamber of Commerce meeting at San Mayor Frank Cooksey of who attended the session but was not present for Cisneros said he would request a meeting with Cisneros to discuss a joint A joint airport has been mentioned for several years as a way to solve crowding problems at Austins Robert Mueller Municipal but San Antonio officials had not en couraged the Although Cisneros had said the joint facility was among his long range he told an Austin airport task force last year that Austin should not look on a joint airport as a solution to problems at He said then that San Antonio would not need a new airport for 25 to 35 San Antonio just completed a million airport The task force recommended that Mueller airport be relocated without specifying a A minority report by task force member John Cutright recommended a regional airport with San Cisneros and Cooksey said the pro blem of synchronizing the needs of the two communities would have to be worked The difference is that Cisneros seems to be encouraging talk of a regional The quickest way both of us can overcome our air traffic problems is with a combined Cisneros In Dallas is the and its difficult to get to San Antonio and and many corporations mentioned that in looking at this area for possible Cisneros said San Antonio and Austin need to encourage airlines to provide more direct flights between the two cities and such other major cities as New Washington and San Francisco In the longer it seems to me the right thing to do is to build regional facilities Seventyfive miles between the two cities might be a lit tle but with transportation technology it could be easier in a few Cisneros he the Austin City Council has to make decisions about serving city air traffic needs for the next 10 years and Im perfectly willing to talk to Cooksey said of But our whatever it has to include a solution to our problem from now until They have already solved their problem during that time
