The Canyon I,ake Action Center has made a list of several ways to prevent fires around the house. Have a hose handy when burning grass or rubbish — and do not burn anything in dry or windy weather Do not let piles of rubbish accumulate. These can easily start a fire. A garden hose with a variable nozzle is a good item to have around the house. It should be long enough to reach around the house or anywhere in the house. It is a good idea to have a hose in the front and back of the house. If you have a fire extinguisher in the house, check it periodically to make certain it is still in working order. Smoke detectors are good safety devices and relatively inexpensive. G VTO rates will increase Customers of the Guadalupe Valley Telephone Cooperative will be seeing an increase in their phone bills for October because of a change in the state tax structure. House Bill 1949, passed by the 1985 Texas Legislature, allows intrastate interlata long-distance phone calls to be taxed. That means calls within the state and from one service area to another will be taxed. Joyleen Dodson, GVTC's business manager, said a lata is a service area. These calls will be taxed 4.125 percent, the state sales tax levied on other services. The state comptrollers office interpreted the legislation to mean that the long-distance services are taxable if the service is provided by a long distance carrier and the charge is billed by the cooperative to its members to be passed through to the long distance carrier. GVTC is working to convince the comptroller that cooperative members should be exempt from this tax.
