New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - September 12, 1985, New Braunfels, Texas Of RYL CLARK HERALD ZEITUNG Canyon's Scott Wagner hunts down Gonzales quarterback Gene Kridler Cougars must stop Veer, passing attack of Del Valle Herald Zeitung, New Braunfels, Texas Thursday, September 12, 1985 Page 7A Cards catch Mets; Royals stretch lead By DAVID KING Sports editor University of Houston Coach Bill Yeoman may get a dirty letter from the Canyon defense before all this is over. Yeoman is the father of the Veer offense, a hard-to-defend, option style of football. And for the second straight week — and what will turn out of be three of the first four games — the Cougars must come up with a way to stop the Veer. This week’s U of H clone is Del Valle, which plays Canyon at 8 p.m. Friday at Del Valle. “Yep, another Veer team,” Canyon Coach Troy Burch said with a sigh. “They do the same stuff as Gonzales, the basic Houston Veer.” There are some differences, though. The Cardinals (0-1 after a 17-6 loss to Marble Falls) throw the ball more than the Apaches. Junior quarterback Jon Dumaron completed IO of 20 attempts for 93 yards against tile Mustangs, including a nine-yard scoring pass to split end Randy Houston, and he burned Gonzales deep twice in a pre-season scrimmage. “Hopefully we’U be able to defend the pass better this week,” Burch said. The Cougars have made steady progress in pass defense since their first scrimmage as new cornerbacks Kevin Nemec and Hector Martinez have settled in; last week Canyon allowed one completion (a fourth-down touchdown) and had two pass interference calls. The Cardinals’ line will get off the ball quicker, and though they don’t have a game-breaker like Willard O’Neal, all the backs can run with the ball well. “They’re a quicker team than Gonzales, and that worries me,’’ Bruch said. “Quickness can hurt us, and quick size can be a real problem.” Del Valle will start three players on offense and four on defense who weigh more than 200 pounds, m- By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Cesar Cedeno couldn’t be in Cincinnati for the fireworks, so he made some of his own in New York. Cedeno, traded from the Reds to the Cards in late August, led off the 10th inning with a home run off reliever Jesse Orosco. The victory left St. I-ouis and New York tied for first place in the National league East with 83-54 records. Cards pitcher John Tudor outshone Dwight Gooden, giving up three hits in IO innings while raising his record to 18-8 with his third shutout in a row. Royals 2, Angels 1 Jamie Quirk singled home one run and pinch-hitter Jorge Orta hit a run-scoring double in the seventh inning to snap a scoreless tie as the Royals moved 24 games up in the American League West. Blue Jays 3, Tigers 2 In Toronto, IJoyd Moseby singled home Tony Fernandez from second base to snap a tie in the seventh inning as the Blue Jays sent Detroit to its seventh straight defeat. Reliever Dennis l-amp, unbeaten this season, won his ninth game. eluding two-way starter Melvin Williams, whom Burch said was the Cardinals’ best defender. Williams plays offensive tackle and nose guard. Dal Valle’s backs are big, too. Halfback Nigh Clary, a three-year veteran of the varsity, is 5-8 and 190 pounds and fullback Charles Calloway is a 6-1,180-pound senior. “We had a lot of trouble tackling (Clary) last year, especially in the first half," Burch noted.
