New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - August 23, 1985, New Braunfels, Texas Religious focus Huruld-Ztitung Friday, August 23, 1985 SA We all serve as role models By PASTOR RAYMOND W BIZER Faith United Church of Christ A sign of the times is emerging in various parts of our community and across the nation as well. The sign is usually a metal one which is placed a picture or symbol of an eye, along with the words “Crime Watch" or “Neighborhood Alert." The implication is that all who are coming into that particular neighborhood are being watched. Of course, the watch is developed to alleviate crimes in the area. It does have the side benefit of bringing neighbors together and to have them become concerned for each other It is known to many that we are being watched, whether for good or Ministerial alliance evil. Someone is interested in our behavior. Or putting it in another way, all of us are either good or poor examples or role models for others, especially for children and young people. One of the great problems of our society today is our inability to provide wholesome role models for children and youth. All are great imitators and we must remember that. The kinds of persons that were role models a few generations ago are no longer the role models of today. Whether it is with the clothes that we wear. the food that we eat, the way in which we act. we seek to follow in the steps of others. Whatever we do, wherever we are, whoever we are, we are always examples, for good or evil, to those around us. The Apostle Paul on several occasions speaks of the way that we may become imitators of Christ. And he even goes on to say that by imitating Christ first, in turn his followers then become someone to be imitated by others. One good example gives birth to another. In the time of testing it is not arguments but inspiring examples that carry the day. A long time before football coaches said, “Winning isn't the main thing in life it is the only thing," it was Albert Schweitzer who said, "Example is not the main thing in life, it is the only thing." Do you remember the beautiful story of Harper Lee entitled To Kill A Mockingbird? Atticus Finch is a lawyer in a small southern town and one day is called upon to defend a young black man who has been charged with attacking a white girl. He agrees to do so and immediately comes the abuse, the scorn of the people in town. But he goes ahead and defends him anyway. The boy is really innocent and Atticus Finch defends him capably. But when the jury comes in no one is surprised that its verdict is guilty. Atticus Finch’s two children are See EXAMPLE. Page 6A Worship at the church of your choice Local.
