New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - February 6, 1985, New Braunfels, Texas Scoreboard ) . 8A New Braunfels HeraSd-Zeitung Wednesday, February 6,1985 Cards upset Rangers By DAVID KING Sports editor No secret plan beat Smithson Valley Tuesday night. No trick play, no special defense by the Southside Cardinals. No, the key to the Cardinals’ 58-56 victory was pretty simple. “The ballgame was when they went down the teeth of our zone for three straight layups,’’ Rangers Coach Roger Kraft said. “And it wasn’t any one guy’s fault. We had five guys who stood around and watched.” The Rangers stood around and watched long enough to fall from a tie for second to fourth in the District 27-3A race at 4-3. Southside is 4-2, a halfgame behind 5-2 Boerne and one and a half behind 6-1 Cole. Southside's dissection of the Rangers’ zone came after Tony Rendon’s jump shot had given Smithson Valley a 50-42 lead with six minutes left in the game. The Cardinals hustled the ball up the floor and Mike Gutierrez slipped through the defense for an easy basket. Smithson Valley lost the ball at the other end and Eddy Rodriguez sliced through the Rangers for another layup. Smithson Valley’s Ray Reyes, who led all scorers with 25 points, scored on a layup behind the Southside defense, but then David Flores got through the Rangers again to make it 52-48 with 4:22 left. “We had ’em, and we let ’em off the hook,” Kraft noted of the comeback. After a Smithson Valley time out, the Rangers missed two shots, lost the ball, and watched as Southside's Robert Chavez faked Paul Pharris out of his shorts and score an easy * basket to make it 52-50. Rolando Trevino was fouled seconds later, but the Rangers' No. 2 scorer missed the front end of a one-and-one. The Cardinals rebounded and tied the game on a follow shot by • post man Jeff Johnson, who was their leading scorer with 16 points. The teams traded baskets from there until Southside’s Tim Higgins tipped in a miss to make it 56*54. • Smithson Valley couldn’t get a shot to fall at the other end, and the Cardinals rebounded, pushed the ball up the floor and got a 14-footer from ‘Leonard Cortez to go up by four with 1:17 left. After a time out, Smithson Valley 'responded with a driving six-foot shot by Mike Irvine, and the Hangers got * the ball back on a five-second violation with 30 seconds left in the game. But instead of working the ball inside for a shot, the Rangers passed the ball around the perimeter in the final seconds, then lost it on a traveling violation with two seconds ’ reinanining. “I have no idea why they did that,” Kraft said. “It’s a puzzle to me. I don’t know what they were f thinking.” ! - It was almost typical for an evening in which the Rangers were outhustled under the basket and hounded out of their offense by a quick Southside press and a tough trapping defense. “We had a few crucial turnovers against the press, but we had : practiced against it all week,” Kraft i, said. “In the tough situations, they , just forgot what to do.” \ Smithson Valley had a chance to run away with the game late in the On the air WEDNESDAY TELEVISION 6 p.m. — Basketball: La Salle at Notre Dame, ESPN, WCN 7 p.m. — Basketball: Pittsburgh at Providence, USA. 7 p m — Basketball.
