New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - November 18, 1984, New Braunfels, Texas 6A New Braunfels Herald Zeitung Sunday, November 18, 1984American, Delta bring higher fares to ex-Braniff routes DALLAS (AP) — American Airlines and Delta Air Lines have sharply increased fares — in some cases more than double — on routes from Dallas-Fort Worth to five major cities that were abandoned earlier this month by Bramff Inc. The new fares will be in force throughout the holiday travel season, the airlines said. American and Delta have raised prices on flights from Dallas-Fort Worth to Detroit, Kansas City, Newark, Miami and Philadelphia. Braniff stopped service to those cities and five others Nov. 5 in the face of heavy losses since the resurrected carrier began flying again in March. Round-trip tickets, if bought seven days in advance, now cost between $140 and $200 more than when Braniff was flying to those cities. Prices of tickets bought on shorter notice or at the time of departure are significantly higher. Before Braniff’s cutbacks, the price of its peak daytime round-trip flight to Philadelphia was $318, a price matched by .American and Delta. The same round-trip, with an advance ticket purchase, now costs $459 on the two airlines. A ticket on the day of departure is $682. A ticket from Dallas-Fort Worth to Miami was $198 when Braniff was flying there. Now. a round-trip ticket on American or Delta bought in advance costs $457 — while a ticket purchased at departure is $620. In the nine cities Braniff continues to serve from Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, American and Delta have matched Braniff’s fares. Spokesmen for American and Delta said the increases raise fares to levels they were before Braniff resumed flights. The lower fares “were unrealistically low, making it difficult to cover our operating costs,” Matt Guilfoyle, Delta’s district marketing manager, said last week. American spokesman Al Becker said the fares had been returned "to our mileage-based system, which is more equitable to the cost of doing business.” * ATTENTION * * ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ DO YOU LIKE : # Saving money on your energy bill? • Excellent service from professionals? # Discount for cash payments? # The option to buy or lease your storage tank? # High quality propane for less? The complaint, filed Friday by I,ocal 776 of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, also accuses the company of “restraining and coercing employees” from exercising their right to take part in union activities and failing to bargain in good faith. General Dynamics officials, who filed their own unfair labor practice complaint on Nov. 8, had no comment on the union ac cusations. Regional NLRB director Michael Dunn said the company and union complaints were being investigated and could lead to litigation before an administrative law judge. The plant, which delivers 13 F-16 jet fighters a month, has filled 41 percent of the strikers’ jobs using supervisors, foremen and non-striking union members, a company spokesman said. No developments were reported Saturday in negotiations to settle the strike, the first at the plant since 1946. The company wants to limit pay increases to 3 percent annual bonuses, while the union is demanding a boost in hourly wages. Union spokesman Jim Conley said Friday that about 30 of the 6,400 striking machinists had crossed picket lines to return to work. He said union members violating the strike may face disciplinary measures after the walkout ends. Conley said General Dynamics fired six workers over the past week for “gross misconduct on the picket line.” but he said none of the employees had engaged in misconduct. At least 19 strikers were arrested during the first two days of the strike when workers staged demonstrations at the plant’s front gate. KRAFTS HOME AND AUTO900 W.
