New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - December 11, 1983, New Braunfels, Texas Pryor, Judson roll to 5A finals New Braunfels Hera\d-Zeitung Sunday, December 11,1983 7A By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS SAN ANTONIO — Running bade Chria Pryor claimed a state Class 5A record of 2,600 yards as he grabbed four touchdowns and helped Converse Judson vanquish Houston Yates 29-19 in a Class 5A high school football semifinal contest Saturday. Pryor’s season performance, including 258 yards in 39 carries against Yates, eclipsed the 2,411-yard mark set by Houston Stratford’s Craig James in 1978. Pryor, 5-10 and 195 pounds, passed James’ record by IO yards on his 14th carry Saturday to tally 2,421 for the season with a 21-yard run. Judson, the first San Antonio team to make the championship meet since Churchill won state in 1976, squares off against Midland Lee at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Texas Stadium at Irving. Pryor scored on runs of ll, 4 and 4 yards, plus a 24-yard TD dash that gave Judson the winning margin in the fourth quarter. The Rockets came from behind three times Scoreboard against the Yates team, which had the size advantage, both offensively and defensively.Lubbock Estacado 20 Carthago 16 BROWNWOOD - Fullback Rodney Jackson plowed for 201 yards and a touchdown as Lubbock Estacado rallied to defeat Carthage 20-16 Saturday afternoon in a Gass 4A semifinal football playoff game. Estacado, now 13-1, will face Bay City next weekend in the Class 4A championship game. Time and location of that contest has not yet been decided. Carthage’s Bulldogs bow out of the playoffs with an 11-3 mark. Tailback Terry Upshaw added 109 yards and the go-ahead score for Estacado in the third quarter. Kenny Henderson’s 6-yard run in the second quarter broke open an early defensive struggle and put the Bulldogs on top 7-0. Jackson’s S-yard TD scamper on Estacado’s ensuing possession knotted the score at 7-7 midway through the second quarter.Midland Lee 35 Plano 14 ODESSA — Midland Lee halfback Walter Jones exploded for fourth-quarter touchdown runs of I, 72 and 61 yards Saturday to snap a 14-14 tie, lifting the Rebels to a 35-14 win over Plano in a Class 5A state football semifinal playoff contest. The Rebels, now 13-2, will face Converse Judson in next week’s 5A championship game. Plano finishes its season at 14-1. Lee jumped out to a 6-0 lead on a 32-yard dash by halfback Tyrone Thurman. But the Wildcats stormed back on a 6-yard TD crash by fullback Scott Huckaby and a 26-yard scoring pass from quarterback Monty West to split end Tim Landrum to grab a 14-6 halftime lead. A 45-yard TD jaunt by fullback Isaac Garnett and 2-point conversion run by Jones knotted the score at 14 midway through the third quarter. The tie stood until Jones crashed over from I yard out to give Lee a 21-14 advantage.Staskus named to Kodak team SAN MARCOS — Linebacker Tim Staskus of Southwest Texas has been named to the American Football Coaches Association Kodak All-America team for college division I. Bentrim, a freshman quarterback, directed North Dakota State’s option offense flawlessly as the Bison won their first NCAA Division II national title after appearing in the playoffs four previous years. The victory ended Central State's unbeaten string of 13 consecutive games, including a 12-0 record this year, and spoiled the Marauders’ first appearance in the playoffs. Bentrim, playing with the poise of a veteran, guided the Bison to a 26-14 halftime lead and Central State never recovered from the 21-point first-quarter explosion. The Dakotans scored the first three times they got the ball Bentrim passed IO yards to Stacy Robinson for the first score, ran 35 yards for a touchdown and then handed off to freshman running back Chad Stark, who leaped one yard for a touchdown with 53 seconds left in the first quarter. ; A Christmas Special From Webb Lube Center 245 S.
