(AP) — Former major league baseball player and manager Charlie Grimm, described by a long-time associate as “the original Mr. Cub,” has died at 85. Grimm, who lived in Scottsdale, had been hospitalized for about a month, suffering from cancer. He died Tuesday night at Scottsdale Memorial Hospital. “I’ve known Charlie for about 30 years or more since I’ve been with the Cub organization,” said E. R. “Salty” Saltwell, the Chicago Cubs vice president of business operations. “To me, he was the original Mr. Cub. He was with the ball club many years in a variety of capacities.” Jolly Cholly is what they called him, and with good reason. Grimm, who managed the Cubs a total of 14 years, and also had a four-year stint with the Milwaukee Braves, was fun personified. Grimm was a gag-throwing, banjo-strumming character who also was one of the slickest fielding first basemen in major league history. His antics on and off the field and his close ties to then Cub owner Phil Wrigley were legend as he was hired to manage the Cubs three different times and led them to three pennants, including the last one they ever wolf in 1945.Foyt returns to racing DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) - A.J. Foyt, apparently well on the way to recovery from a ruptured disc suffered four months ago, was back in action this week, testing his new stock car at Daytona International Speedway. The 48-year-old Foyt, the only four-time winner of the Indianapolis 500, was rumored heading into forced retirement after aggravating an old back injury and being ordered by doctors to stay out of race cars indefinitely.
