New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - October 26, 1983, New Braunfels, Texas •A Now Braunfels Herald -Zoning Wednesday, October 26,1983 Taylor lawyer to defend nurse in infant's death GEORGETOWN (AP) - Bart Carnel of Taylor, a former aaMstant district attorney in Dellas and Travis counties, has been appointed to help defend Genene Jones, a nurse accused of murdering a lfrmonth-old girl in Kerrville last year. Carnes was named Tuesday to replace another court-appointed attorney who withdrew from the case, William B. Chenault of San Antonio. Chenault complained the pay was inadequate and he could not afford to remain on the case. Jones, 38, a vocational nurse, is accused of murder in the September 1183 death of lfrmonth-old Chelsea Ann McClellan of Kerrville. Her murder trial hi set for Jan. 9 here. She has been in custody in lieu of $390,000 bond since last week after her bondsman said be could not guarantee 'her court appearance. Jones stood before District Judge John R. Carter during a brief hearing Tuesday. Afterward, she was escorted back to Jail. Carter approved Chenault’s request to withdraw after Jones said she did not object. She is also represented by Jim Brookshire of Georgetown, another court-appointed lawyer. Chenault was the second court- appointed lawyer to withdraw from the Jones case. The murder trial was moved here from Kerrville on a change of venue, and right after that, court-appointed lawyer Joe Grady Tuck of Kerrville successfully petitioned the court to be dismissed from the case. Jones also faces charges in Kerrville of causing serious injury to six other children by giving them injections of a powerful muscle relaxant,    She    has flmilfH all riargn igilwa her. She used to work in Son Antonio, and a Bexar County grand Jury has been investigating a string of suspicious infant deaths there between 1978 and early 1983 at the pediatric intensive care unit of Medical Center Hospital. Chenault said he had spent $80,000 defending Miss Jones so far, bot had been reimbursed only $4,500 to $5,000. “I have been on the case six months and at this point they’ve paid me no fee whatsoever and only about IO percent of my actual expenses.” said Chenault, a real estate lawyer who said he has never tried a murder case. Under that system “They can convict the Pope,” he said. Bush to attend dinner in Dallas for Reagan AUSTIN (AP) — President Ronald Reagan will not attend a State Republican Party dinner in Dallas Thursday “because of the press of recent events” and will be replaced by Vice President George Bush. “Texas Republicans are greatly honored that the vice president and our fellow Texan has been able to adjust his schedule and be with us on Thursday evening,” said State GOP Chairman George Stroke.
