New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - March 2, 1983, New Braunfels, Texas New Braunfels Heta\6-Zeitung Wednesday, March 2,1983 3A Give a cheer Eight year old Kahala Crayton practices a jump under the watchful eye of New Braunfels High School cheerleader Michelle Jaramillo. New Braunfels cheerleaders taught a variety of jumps, chants, cheers and sideline dances to youngsters at a clinic Saturday at Academy Street Gym. Staff photo by Cirxty Ric hardson Chamber view Tracing visitors and their dollars What in the world is tourism*’ Well, for one thin*: it is only part of the Visitor Industry Yes. a family visiting here from Houston for a weekend falls in the tourist category But what about a member of that same family attending the Texas legislative Conference next week’’ He or she is not exactly a tounst by some definitions but definitely a part of the Visitor Industry. The Chamber is very involved in promoting and improving New Braunfels' visitor industry Why** Try this! Take all of your folding money out of your purse or billfold. On the darker side of these bills you will see a "seal" with a large initial in the center If the initial is K" that bill was issued from the Federal Reserve {tank in Dallas, then through its branch in San Antonio to our local banks, and finally throughout our community. Do you have bills with other initials" How did they get here’’ Rarely is cash mailed When a large industry with a local plant sends payroll funds it's done by draft, not cash The answer is that the overwhelming majority of these bills have initials other than ”K" are hand carried here by people .. . visitors That is the visitor industry. It might be worth adding that usually you'll find more currency from other Federal Reserve regions among the five, ten. and twenty dolar bills than one dollar bills. Naturally the more bills you have the more accurate the gauge of the visitor industry impact on you and this community. Do this several times over the next few weeks and figure the percentage of the visitor dollar to your total cash y ou’ll be surprised' In the last two decades the local business and professional community has become increasingly aware of the value and importance of the visitor industry to the economy of the community That is why more and more they are speaking out to inform not only government agencies but the general public as w ell To exist as a conununity we depend on our business and professional firms to provide jobs, pay most of the local taxes, and be the major backers of local, civic, and philanthropic activities. The only way to accomplish this is to continue attracting more dollars into the community than are leaving Basically this can be accomplished only by producing a product or service that is sold for out-of-town dollars. Increasing the manufacturing category is certainly not as easy, nor are the prospects as plentiful. However the visitor industry , especially for a city like New Braunfels, can be very rewarding Both types of economic development, manufacturing and the visitor industry , have their disadvantages which no one desires. Both offer opportunities. but in a very competitive market. But with patience, perserverence. statesmanship, and. above all. unity, we can deal with the challenges and benefit from the opportunities.
