New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - August 21, 1952, New Braunfels, Texas Augnst 21, 1952 NfrW BRAUNFELS ZEITUNG — HUNDREDTH ANNIVERSARY City Accepts Pre-Mix Paving For Coma Ave., Col! Street The city commisiun Monday voted to accept the alternate bid on the paving of Comal Avenue and a section of Cotí street after more than 25 property owners on these streets appeared at a called hearing and unanirnoLLsly chose the pre-mix paving called for by the alternate contract. Dean Word Con-spany had submitted a bid of 8o2,8(>0.8() for the standard m\-erte<i per;';-tration paving, arid S34.83'.) for the pre-niix or asphaltic concrete paving. The ditierence in cost amounted to but 10 cents a front foot to the pr(jpert\' owners on the 40 foot wide streets, and even less to those on Comal Avenue, east of Nacogdoches Street, where it narrows to 34 feet. This section of Comal Avenue to Highway 81 is bordered by large trees which the owners and the city wish to presei've. In the hearing preceding the vote, Capt. Alfred iSchlafh, the engineer supervising the work for the city, stated that the base for this paving woidd be equal in strength to that of Seguin Avenue, a standard 9-inch base compacted to 7 inch<^, and that the asphaltic concrete topping specified in the alternate project was the same type used by the Highway Department on Seguiti AvoniTC."" Thii^ the streets to be pavi?^ would equal the most heavily traveled street in town in load carrying ability. The style of paving .chosen will cost Sl.(>2 per front foot to property owners on the 40 foot streets. SI.38 on the 34 foot street. The cin'].). where installed new, will C(»t Si.Oi! per tool, where installed to replace an older curb, only 50 cents. Real estate dealer R. J. Gode testified at the hearing that the paving and curbing would increase the values on the adj(»in-ing property from 84 to per front foot. It will be necessary to revise drainage levels in the .southeastern part of the area ser\'ed by Comal Avenue to prevent flooding near Kessler and Hampe streets, Capt. Schlafli stated, but this would be ar-i-anged as part of the project, which is expected to start within two weeks and will take 90 days to complete.
