Galveston Chamber of Commerce kicked off its Shop Local campaign for Galveston Island In addition to urging everyone to embrace this campaign I would also like to enhance this effort by adding buy local and sell local to the con cept The more we receive in local pur chasing the bigger Johnny Smecca Guest column the economic ttenefit to everyone on the island Local buying of groceries office supplies clothing and other items directly impacts our retailers and shop owners In addition local buying of legal services em ployment services and other serviceprofessional services also results in direct eco nomic impact for our com munity With this in mind I would also like to challenge the Galveston businesses to em brace the sell local mindset of recognizing Galvestonians who buy and shop locally As important as it is for us to buy locally and to require new investors to the island to use as many local ven dorssuppliers as possible I also think that the residents of Galveston who make this the greatest city in the world also deserve recog nition for the contributions that they make 12 months out of the year every year We Galvestonians know that spending our paychecks on the island plans to begin service in Philadelphia starting in May Southwest chairman Herb Kelleher is scheduled to an nounce the companys plans on Tuesday at a news confer ence at the airport The Philadelphia Inquirer re ported The airline declined to comment on the deal Southwest plans to initially offer about 40 flights a day and occupy four gates at the end of a terminal previously leased to American Airlines which gave up the rights to the gates last year Airport officials said the airlines routes to and from Philadelphia would likely be disclosed in December strengthen the local economy but did you know that shopping on the island also helps to reduce our property taxes Thats right For every dollar spent in Galveston the city is paid sales tax in come that is funneled into the citys general fund and enables the city to offset the property tax rate by a half cent State law allows the city to receive in sales tax revenue onehalf cent to offset prop erty taxes Annually this accounts for over mil lion Sales tax revenue offsets almost 15 cents per valuation in the property tax for the 2004 fiscal year and represents more than million a year almost 10 percent of the citys general fund budget For a taxpayer with a house that represents a annual tax savings Every time you make a purchase on the island whether its a meal a garden hose or a car you are helping to lower your prop erty taxes Galvestons economy is growing You have more choices for products on the island today than any time in the recent past Professional services are available in abundance and our opportunities to support the local economy are limit less Please consider shop ping buying and selling lo cally the next time you are considering a purchase deci sion Johnny Smecca is past chairman on the Galveslon
