Galveston Daily News (Newspaper) - May 24, 1991, Galveston, Texas FRIDAY MORNING MAY 24 1991 THE GALVESTON DAILY NEWS 17A LM chiefs probation rescinded By ANNE COMSTOCK Th9 Dally News LA MARQUE Police Chief Larry Crows extended proba tion was rescinded Thursday by interim City Manager Da vid Brinson Crow received the 90day probation extension May 17 from former City Manager Gary Jackson before Jackson left his post in La Marque to serve as the Texas City city secretary I met with the interim city manager on Thursday May 23 and in this meeting a mutual agreement was reached and my extended probation was re Crow said Crow has been with the La Marque Police Department for 23 years He was placed on a sixmonth probation last fall following a 15day suspension after improperly handling a subpoena Brinson could not be reached for comment Thursday and Mayor Carlton Getty said he had no statement because he was not involved in the deci sion But Councilman Randy Lynn who had requested that the probation extension be in cluded on the upcoming City Council meeting agenda said he felt the issue was settled in the best possible way Lynn said Tuesday he would request that the probation be rescind ed It was a big Lynn said Its water under the bridge now though And Im just glad to see everything back in Judge orders LC to release report on track group ILC TRACK tD By ANNE COMSTOCK The DaHy News GALVESTON A judge or dered League City Thursday to re lease a background report on two members of the Race Marketing Associates staff to the public District Judge Roy Engelke granted a writ of mandamus filed Tuesday by attor neys for KTRK TV Channel 13 after about an hour of argu ments from both sides The report which contains in formation on the companys presi dent and vice president for marketing had been ordered re leased by the Texas attorney gen erals office May 17 Interest in the report stemmed from the citys plan to financially back the auto race track proposed by Race Marketing with about million of taxpayers money through a bond issue Darah Headley the attorney for Race Marketing said her clients would not answer any questions re garding the report Thursday be cause she had not had time to re view it We may all find that this was much to do about Head ley said Well just have to review and see what it It already is doubtful that the track will ever be built in League City because of the companys fi nancial condition Mayor Joe Lamb said Race Marketing has indicated an interest in other sites around Calves ton County The attorney generals office had ruled more than a month ago that the report was open to the public but the city requested that it remain confidential because sev eral informants named in it wished to remain anonymous League City officials were wait ing until a City Council meeting scheduled for today to decide whether to release the report or pursue litigation to keep it confi dential There is no reason for the ur City Attorney Mark Soko low argued The problem in this case is that the plaintiff is really jumping the gun The City Council has not even had a chance to make its decision The plaintiff is assum ing they still wont release The city also resisted releasing the report which was filed by Stan Lewis and Associates because it was concerned about liability if it contained false information The report alleges that William McVey the companys president was arrested and charged with possession and manufacture of marijuana in Florida in 1983 and also has had problems in his finan cial dealings Also according to the report Richard Merrifield the vice presi dent for marketing did not attend or graduate from the university listed on his resume defaulted on several loans and filed for bank ruptcy Sokolow said the report should be made available to Race Market ing and its attorney before the pub lic is allowed to see it But Engelke gave the city 20 minutes to make the report available to anyone which allowed no time for Headley to request a restraining order Im really surprised at the out come Headley said But we still maintain that Race Mar keting was a necessary party It was impossible to take remedial action against the judges ruling in the 20minute time period I am disturbed at that very Several League City residents attending the hearing were jubi lant after Engelke rendered his de cision Linda Puneky a member of Citi zens Against Ruining the Environ ment said the ruling was a victory for all residents There has been too much secre cy all Puneky said Lets move ahead with June P Ross MR GEORGE BATISTE JUNE P ROSS CITY COUNCIL POSITION 2 Pd Pol by Comm lo Eloct June P Ron Leroy Bl 1927 45th GolvHon 77550 Passing Continued
