54yearold Bill Shoemaker guiding Ferdinand to the Kentucky Derby winners cir cle last weekend And now theres 39yearold Kareem AbdulJabbar whos at tempting to lead the Los Angeles Lakers to their second straight National Basketball Association championship AbdulJabbar the oldest player in the NBA scored a gamehigh 31 points grabbed six rebounds and blocked three shots Saturday to lead the Lakers past the Houston Rockets 119107 in the opener of the Western Conference finals AbdulJabbars performance against Houston was no surprise considering hes been especially dominant offensively against the Rockets in recent years With the arduous regular season over and the playoffs heating up AbdulJabbar might be expected to be getting a little fatigued at this time but he said such wasnt the case The only tired thing Ive no ticed around this time is Tommy Heinsohns he said referring to the CBS announcer and former Boston Celtic who was recently elected to the Hall of Fame Other than that Im in as good a condition as anybody I have to play against I dont have a secret I pay the price in the offseason Its some thing I want to do I enjoy the AbdulJabbar who played 35 minutes and made 13 of his 23 fieldgoal attempts pointed to the play of the Los Angeles guards as the key factor Saturday They werent able to get the job done in the he said Our guard play was better than their guard play I think that was the AbdulJabbar defended most of the time by 7foot4 Ralph Samp son went over and around his younger foe with relative ease as the Lakers beat the Rockets for the ninth time in 11 games be tween the teams dating back to the beginning of the 198485 season AbdulJabbar the NBAs all time leading scorer has averaged 32 points in those games usually getting the best of Sampson and 7foot Akeern Olajuwon Houstons other If I front him theyre going to lob over Sampson said If I play behind him it works better Ill play better Tuesday than I did today Kareem is playing better now than I can remember him play The second game in the bestof7 series will be played at the Forum Tuesday night with the third and fourth games scheduled at Houston next Friday night and Sunday Los Angeles Coach Pat Riley said AbdulJabbar has a tougher time against the Rockets than it might appear They the Rockets dont make it easy for Riley said It might seem like its easy Hes constantly working He works very hard to get his spot and Magic Johnson makes great The 72 AbdulJabbar had 28 of his points in the first three quarters as the Lakers took command of the game played be fore a sellout crowd of at the Forum and a national televi sion audience We were out of sync all day Houston Coach Bill Fitch I give the Lakers credit their defense their tempo No doubt about it theyre the world champs and they played very well today If we dont play better its going to be over in a hurry But were not going to panic having lost the The Lakers who are attempting to become the first team to repeat as NBA champions since the Boston Celtics 17 years ago led 6458 at halflime thanks mainly to 20 points by AbdulJabbar The Rockets got as close as three points three times early in the third quarter but led by Ear vin Magic Johnson the Lakers took a 10point advantage midway through the period and werent seriously threatened after that Johnson had 10 of his 26 points in the third quarter and also fin ished a gamehigh 18 assists Byron Scott added 18 points for the Lakers H was 9482 entering the fourth quarter and Houston wasnt closer than eight points in the final 12 Sec ROCKETS Page iC i 13 Women draw huge crowds to tourney Mary Tyier Moore is just ordinary people Professional female tennis players are too And both have come a long way baby to get where theyve gotten to today Fifteen years ago marked the inception of the womens professional tour beginning in 1971 as The Virginia Slims Circuit Since then the Virginia Slims World Championship Series consists of over 55 events played in 11 countries and encompasses vir tually every major tournament in which more than 300 women tennis players compete The Virginia Siims of Houston Tennis Tournament has been racking in record crowds this past week into the jampacked Westside Tennis Center stands Needless to say the Houston tennis enthusiasts have flocked the tournament to see the lady mainly responsible for the Virgina Slims ruckus Chris Evert Lloyd But is Chrissie really the primadonna of ladies tennis everyone envisions What do tennis players do when theyre not on the court What impact have the women really made in the game of tennis today I wasnt sure what to expect but the trips up and down Interstate 45 have been well worth the petro and hastles with the daily Houston mayhem The answer to the first mystery is a definite yes I had already prejudged Evert Lloyd as being in a class of her own and my male intuition was right on the money She is very businesslike but knows when and how to break up the monotony with a complacent smile or a facetious remark She has fun playing the game Sure big big bucks are an incentive but the greater reward for her comes from the competition of the sport Evert Lloyd isnt content being the No 2 player in the world But if she fails this year to regain her top ranking you can bet shell be back next year to again try to take back what is rightfully hers Lloyd may be biggest name Evert Lloyd attracts crowds wherever she goes Hundreds have waited anxiously to get a glimpse of her during her prematch warmups or after a tour nament match and possibly even close enough to ask for a coveted but sometimes shunned autograph Ive been arms length away from Chrissie several times and still havent been able to get one myself Maybe today will be my lucky day If I could only get past that one blondeheaded lady that tails players everywhere at the press Sandy Collins 27 of Odessa spoke to me about the daily ritual of a professional tennis player during a long tournament She was only entered in the dou bles this time around and her firstround match with partner Terry Holladay of Del Mar Calif was played early Tuesday morning Collins and Holladay defeated Camille Benjamin of Bakersfield Calif and Kim Sands of Miami 64 64 but her next match against fourthseeded Zina Garrison of Houston and Kathy Rinaldi of Gainesville Fla wasnt scheduled until late Friday night What is there to do for the next days Theres usually just a lot of sitting around in the hotel rooms watching television and relaxing and going to Collins laughed Then Ill go out to eat and then try to figure out wheres the next place Im going to eat It can be pretty But Collins quickly noted there is more work in the circuit than people are apt to notice Id like to trade a day with those that dont think theres more to it than just playing a tennis tournament and making money Sure theres a lot of idle time and you can get bored but you make your own fun I just decide what I want to do and go do it You sometimes have See WOMEN Page 3C f r Staff photo by Jim Cruz Eventual champion Doug McPherson emerges from Gulf with triathlon lead McPherson claims title in triathlon
