Press International Tom Seaver is going to enjoy this years AllStar break Dave Concepcion singled homered and drove in four runs Sunday helping Seaver win his seventh straight game when the Cincinnati Reds scored a 7 1 victory over the Chicago Cubs The victory was the ninth against five losses for Seaver who struck out seven walked three and gave up five hits before UPI Telephoto RANGER STARTER John Johnson looks off into space after watching a Texas lead evaporate against the Kansas City Royals Ranger catcher Jim Sundberg keeps Johnson company on the mound while reliever Danny Darwin is called in The Royals eneded their sevengame losing streak by downing Texas 43 planning to leave Pan Am Games in style SAN JUAN Puerto Rico UPI While the Cubans slipped redfaced out the back door the United States prepared to leave the Pan American Games in sjyle amid a flurry of flashing feet and fists that netted nine gold medals in track and field and boxing Saturday athletes began their gtfld medal collection Saturday afternoon when all four relay teams and meter runner Don Paige posted victories in tBe track and field com petition They added four more gold medals in boxing Saturday night as Lemuel Steeples Jackie Beard Bernard Taylor and Tony Tucker scored victories The womens soft ball team behind the one hit pitching of Barbara Reinalda also won the gold medal by beating Puerto Rico 20 Overall the has now won 125 gold medals in the two weeks of competition at the Games more than twice as many as its nearest competitor Cuba In addition the picked up three more golds in yachting and it could add one more Sunday in the finals of the individual show jumping Embarassed by their dismal performance at the Games the majority of the Cuban delegation left San Juan early Saturday morning aboard the Cuban boat Heroes of Vietnam and sailed back to their homeland The boxing team however led by two time Olympic heavyweight champion Teofilo Stevenson was able to save face by winning five gold fnedals In track Paige the 22 yearold favorite from Villanova won the mens meter race with a Pan American record time of and Todd Harbour 19 of Post Isabel made it 12 when he nosed put Brazilian Agberto Guimaraesin The also had 16 silvers and 11 bronzes for its best showing in years Sweepstakes event held at Twin Lakes LA MARQUEThe Twin Lakes Ladies Golf Association held sweep stakes competition Sunday ivith the threesome of Dorothy McDermott Marge Snow and Margaret Blackburn winning the event with a15 IIn second place was the foursome of Mitzi Oliphint Rita Marcoulides Lee Gazaway and Verda Bannister with a score of fcl j while the Cubans had 10 silvers and nine bronzes and the Canadians three golds three silvers and 12 bronzes In the 4 x 100 meter relay the American team of James Walker Herman Frazier Morris Peoples and Tony Darden inflicted a third consecutive defeat involving Cuban star Alberto Juantorena The Americans won in but Cuba couldnt even manage second as Jamaica decisively won the silver The womens 4 x 400 meter relay team of Sharon Dabney Patricia Jackson Rosalind Bryant and Essie Kelley was clocked in seconds far ahead of secondplace Cuba with Canada was third in The mens 4 x 100 meter relay team of Mike Robinson Harvey Glance Cliff Wiley and Steve Riddick clocked seconds with Cuba second and Brazil third Valerie Brisco Karen Hawkins Chandra Cheeseborough and Brenda Morehead ran home with the gold in the womens 4 x 100 relays in to Jamaicas and Cubas Canadas Bruce Simpson leaped 16 feet 10 inches to take the pole vault and Cubas Maria Colon smashed the old Pan American record in the womens javelin with a hurl of 2045 almost 25 feet better than the previous mark Radames Gonzalez won the marathon in to give Cuba another consolation gold Beard was an easy 50 winner over Luis Pizarro of Puerto Rico The 5foot4 120 pounder belted his taller opponent around the ring for all three rounds Beard slowed Pizzaro im mediately with several body shots and them beat him savagely for the remainder of the fight Taylor the silver medalist in the 1975 Pan Am Games also won easily 50 over Naudi Pinero of Venezuela Taylor took to the offense quickly in the first round and scored well all during the fight with combinations to the head and body Steeples also put on a masterful performance in defeating Hugo Hernandez of Argentina in a battle of left handers Steeples belted Hernandez around the ring with ringing right hooks to the head and rapid fire combinations Tucker dropped Dennis Jackson of Puerto Rico with a powerful right hand to the head just 70 seconds into the fight and then rocked him with another good right Tucker con tinued to land heavily throughout the fight and at Doug Bair relieved in the ninth innning Rookie Harry Spillman singled home one run and Ray Knight doubled home two more off loser Rick Reuschel 86 in the first A walk and an error by Ted Sizemore preceded Con cepcions ninth homer as the contract was refused after he had a lengthy meeting with Brown and his represen tative Leigh Steinberg Club owner Bill Bidwill Saturday offered to donate the money to the Jesuit Program for Living and Learning in St Louis if Brown the teams No 2 draft choice came to contract terms Bidwill said Steinberg originally proposed the charity contribution We had assumed the conditions for an agreement set down by Mr Steinberg had been met when we announced ac ceptance of his suggestion for giving to charity the differential remaining between the two Sullivan said However this was unacceptable to them and they have continued to negotiate for a contract beyond the terms we already set down as a last Sullivan said the Car dinals will reduce their offer to Brown by a day for each day he is not signed
