disasters before its too late By Briana Barentine Special Contributor iirsttime homeowner Megan Reinhardt knew she had snagged quite a project last year when she decided to sink her ener gies into an older home But as a designer she relished the creative challenges that lay ahead She worked with a trusted inspector who pointed out the homes weak points She purchased the appropriate insurance policies knowing thatmaintenance particu larly since her house was datdd would be inevitable in the years to come But that point carne just a few months after purchasing her East Dallas pad Disaster struck only she didnt even realize I couldnt tell anything but then a friend came over opened one of the kitchen drawers and noticed that it was hot kind of steamy is what she Ms Reinhardt recalled This steam was in fact leaking from inside the walls and under the floor thanks to a valve behind the sink that sent hot water gushing under their tile and through the plywood Luckily these kitchen woes garnered a much needed makeover for an aging house but she says she could have most likely saved a few steps if she had known from the getgo to be wary of certain structural hot spots Anything in the BestBuy store on Central Expressway a busy mother was speaking on her cell phone and wrestling with her young daughter Meanwhile her son who must have been about 11 years old picked up a video game By the time his moth er got to the register she had put the game in the shopping cart without so much as a glance Bad move Parents need to know one crucial thing about video games anything they can imagine happening in a movie has already been in a video game Anything Thats a pretty scary thought So how are parents to know which games are appropriate for their chil dren Theres one basic test Its hot perfect but its a start On the front of every game sold by a major retailer there is a vlarge blackandwhite letter thatrates the content of that game Its called the ESRB rating In 1994 the video game industry created a voluntary committee called the Entertainment Software Rating Board which like the MPAA for movies has standardized a content rating system for all video games sold by major retailers In the interest of the par ents all major retailers now See GAMES Page 6A Diamonds in Rough Piano students serve community By Sarah Piland Staff Writer To whom much is given much is
