cast including Theresa Fontenette Chantra Horton Candice Williams and Laura Jolly came to the forefront and showed why the Lady Bulldogs are a serious playoff threat We rely on everybody the depth is Holcomb said Sweeny 293 will need every bit of its depth tonight as it challenges Wimberley 278 in the Class 3ARegion IV quarterfinals at Victoria Stroman High School The match is scheduled for Wimberley is definitely a step up from our last match but I think we match up really well with Holcomb explained They have two main hitters that they go to often and they like to attack from the outsides whereas we tend to go to the They have a powerful game but I feel like we can have some success at the net on defense whether it be a block or just getting a hand on the ball Wimberley plays like some of the teams in our district so we will have to be on top of our said Holcomb One of the teams in Sweenys district Stafford fell to Wimberley in three games in the area round of the playoffs Although the Lady Bulldogs handled Stafford easily in the regular season and Wimberley struggled a bit with the Lady Spartans Holcombs not looking for an easy match You cant really take any stock in she said The playoffs are a different story Youve got to play every game like it could be your Holcomb said practice went well Monday and she doesnt expect any nervousness when the match commences tonight It was our first playoff game Saturday and I think we just had to get the jitters out We then realized we were in the playoffs for a reason and got down to Holcomb said Weve got to come out on fire and take control against Wimberley The girls know they are here for a reason and I know well be ready to Alvin Continued from Page IB SA 13 190 i 9 GREAT DAYS NOVEMBER 1998 Date Velocity 8 Time Garza recalled We had two 6footers and three 59ers and we had a great athletic team that year But I keep telling the kids we werent near as talented and skilled as the team I have right now Sometimes I think if I was in the stands watching us warm up I wouldnt think Wow this team is just going to come But you know the kids just come out and work Garza attributes her teams success to its willingness to do whatever she asks and the players respect for themselves and each other Garza hears stories about the tribula tions other coaches go through with stub horn individualized players Alvin she says doesnt have that problem or any other problem for that matter I tell them every day that theyre all quality the secondyear coach said They all go to church and theyre all well mannered and I dont have any problems Its a coachs dream to have kids like that I hope to keep my program like that where those are the kids I can get to where I dont have to take the good athlete with the bad attitude Weve got quality kids and Im real proud of them Being a welldisciplined child is partly the parents raising them that way and all the coaches in my program we always enforced discipline And theyre always going to go out there and be more success ful when I ask them to do something Discipline is doing something that needs to be done immediately Thats something my kids have and its something great to have as a coach I wouldnt ask for any other Garza led the Lady Jackets 318 last year to the area round where they lost to Kingwood Tonights game against Deer Park 267 at Clear Brook High School represents the opportunity to push the pro gram to new heights We talked about that a little bit she said This is a game for us to increase the level of our program not just for this year but for the years to follow We want to get better each year and you want to get better than the year before at minimum They attained that first goal by winning one more game than they did last year Theyre real excited and focused on tomorrow This will be the second time Alvin has played at Clear Brook this year and the sec ond time it has faced the Deer We played Deer Park in Duncanville the first tournament of the season and lost to them in a real tight three Garza said It was 1614 in almost every one of them so it will be a good match for us to play them I saw them play Dobie two weeks ago and Deer Park has traditionally done well and picked up their play in the playoffs They play good defense and they have an outstanding hitter Angie Eppers they go to a lot Deer Park is a good team when they get on a hot streak Were like that too It can be an evenly matched game but we have to perform and they have to As long as the Lady Jackets perform as a team which they did last Thursday in over coming seven service errors to down Stratford 1513 154 then Garza is confi dent her team will be in the thick of victory Julie Goodson 12 kills vs Stephanie Denham six kills and Caley Smith five kills four blocks sparked an outstanding defensive effort that created much more solid play than in Alvins bi district win over La Porte Theyre just good competitors and com pete real well and they play other sports and that Garza said Theyre just used to playing and they love to play Thats something weve been working to establish in our program The ones who dont have the discipline watch the older ones who do and they want to conform They see if you want to stay in this program you have to work Tribute Continued from Page IB for the fourthplace team Most golf tournaments always have a first through third prize and thats Bailey said And every tournament if he wasnt in first second or third place which wasnt very often he would say Man if they would of had one more place F would have So we have a fourthplace prize today and were calling it The One More In the tournament Haley along with team mates Olen Murphy Bert Dahl and Ray Yearsley won the fourman scramble with a team score of 51 The three teams that followed all finished with a 53 The team of Jim Martin Tom Pycatt Powell and Troy Meors won a scorecard playoff for second Glen Campbell Dustin Steger Floyd Anderson and Bill
