WALKING TOWARD A CURE Relay celebrates survivors, raises funds for Cancer Society By ANNA DOLIANITIS Staff writer A celebration took place at Aiken High School on Friday night, and the guests ot honor were about I SO people dressed in purple who have in common the fact that they are survivors of one ol the world's most devastating diseases. The Aiken Relay For Life event benefiting the American Cancer Society began last night ami lasted into this morning, celebrating those who have survived, remembering those lost and bringing the community together Jo fight for a cure for cancer. “What a joy we have tonight to be able to do that,” said the event’s guest speaker and South Aiken Naval Junior ROTI' C ommander Larry Laughlin, who is also a survivor of prostate cancer. "Like many here tonight. I’m a cancer sun ivor. I he Survivor's Walk is always an especially moving way to kkk off the Aiken Relay For Life event and an aggressive course of treatment that included surgery, Laughlin is now cancer-free, and he urged to the crowd to be proactive. “We can all fight back, to make a personal commitment to save lives by taking up the fight against cancer. This could be as simple as getting a screening test, quitting smoking or talking to elected officials about cancer” he said. Bill I ostantine, a 12-year survivor of prostate cancer, and his wife, Elsa, a 23-ycar surv ivor of breast cancer, have participated in the event for nearly a decade and said they were glad to see the turnout of survivors, “It’s good to see so many of them; it’s good to see them all alive,” said Bill.
