gave me a dozen red roses He also gave his 6yearold daughter from a pre vious marriage a dozen red roses too However I noticed that my roses were the shortstemmed variety and his daughters were the long stemmed kind Abby I was under the im pression that St Valentines Day was for lovers I know it is also an occasion for family members and friends to ex press their love but isnt it primarily for lovers When I told him that I was hurt because I got short stemmed roses but his daughter got the long stemmed variety he said we were both supposed to get the longstemmed variety but the friend he asked to get them for him goofed I still cant help feeling jealous Weve been dating for three years and wevet talked about marriage Do you think Im making C a big deal out of nothing 7 JEALOUSVALENTINE i DEAR JEALOUS Yes and I also think youre making a big mistake to compete with your boy friends 6yearold daughter Perhaps hes ing over backward to make her feel secure and loved Children of divorced parents are often the beneficiaries of extravagant gifts from fathers who feel guilty because they cant be fulltime daddies to their children DEAR ABBY My husband and I have two sons both in their 30s They live at home and show no signs of leaving They are not on drugs or anything like that They dont seem interested in girls but I dont think they are gay They are no problem but I am wondering if this is normal Their only inter est is in working and saving their money Are we doing the right thing to let them stay with us We would like to have grandchildren someday but I am beginning to wonder NEWARK NJ DEAR NEWARK If as you say they are problem I see no reason why you shouldnt let them continue to live with you Gay or straight they appear to be living a clean productive life style Asking them to move will not guarantee you grandchildren Have you discussed your concern about their future with them If not please do DEAR ABBY If the neighbors with the bark flipped their mattresses every spring and hosed down their porches have become an endangered spe cies Cleaning house is no longer a religious ex perience Women of the 90s claim they have better things to do Giving up housecleaning wasnt hard for me What converted me to apathy was cleaning my kids rooms It was as ludicrous as cleaning an oven the day before it caught fire Id retrieve glasses and plates of food hidden under the bed take socks off light bulbs rescue pets lost in the woodwork gather up wet towels and discard ed clothes put out the fire in the aquarium and dress my daugh ters naked dolls who looked at me with fear in their eyes The next day Id do it all over again No one seemed to notice one way or another Bleached dish towels werent any more absorbent than dingy gray ones Bathroom faucets cleaned with a toothbrush never got me a standing ovation If my husband was refused a promotion because his boss saw spots on my glasses when they came from the dishwasher no one mentioned it What Im saying is housekeeping is an art that was taken for granted I never heard my dad say to my mother I could eat a meal off the top of your refrigerator That is why I love you so much My grandmothers obituary said she left behind a grieving husband five children and 24 grandchildren It never mentioned she left a clean oven spices arranged in alphabetical order and a waxed driveway The Greek chorus of spokesmen for cleaning products are play ing to a limited audience unless its an item that saves time Todays homemakers have discovered the miracle cure for house work
