in Bowbells ND on July 27 1924 to Arthur and Alviha Trace She grew up in Far go ND as the youngest of six children Al though her formal education was abbreviated In her sopho more year at North Dakota State College by her marriage at age 18 Hertha remained justly proud of her educational and extracurricular attain ments for the rest of her life She met her future husband Ralph while he was attending the US Army DCS program at her college Less than six months later she traveled across the country to his new post and they were married in Baltimore MD on January 3 1943 The Rosses settled in Fay etteville in 1947 residing for manyyears on Genesee Street at what Is now the site of the Fayetteville Senior Center The Rosses were members of Trini ty Episcopal Church Fayette ville for almost 60 years Mrs Ross pastimes included gardening bridge playing the piano and vacationing with her family After her children were grown Hertha and her husband traveled extensively throughout the world Hertha was blessed with a wonderful sense of humor and loved to laugh She Was a vora cious reader with a particular interest in the history of the British monarchy She enjoyed the opportunity to exercise her mind and memory which regu lar viewing of the TV quiz show Jeopardy afforded her She was a firm believer in lifelong learning and belonged to orga nizations that promoted that ideal such as Philomath and PEG Hertha was predeceased by her husband of 62 years Ralph She is survived by two sis ters Hazel Melton of Oregon and Betty Kauppi of Minnesota She is also survived by her sons Thomas of Chittenango Ralph Angela of Richmond VA daughters Marguerite of Baltimore Mb and Kathryn John Wainwright of Raleigh NC seven granddaughters one grandson and two great granddaughters advo cating for childrens welfare through direct practice and re search Susan touched everyone with her caring and compassion and her wide range of interests and activities If you went to Proctors Theatre where she was a volunteer usher she touched you If you were a fe male athlete you benefited from her advocacy for the fed eral Title IX law which ensured equal funding for womens sports Others were touched through her work with Schenec tady Girls Inc and Habitat for Humanity her attempts to em power and bring jobs to minori ties in the city of Schenectady her neighborhood improvement and beautification efforts which included planting and maintaining flower gardens on the island of her longtime home on Woodland Avenue Susan was also very involved in Planned Parenthood where she served as a volunteer es cort She cared and showed she cared through the energy commitment and passion that she put into all these activities Susan and her husband Ian have enjoyed being part of the Unitarian Church and have been actively involved there for over 21 years Her family would like to thank the nurses and doctors at Ellis Hospital for their outstand ing care and sensitivity In lieu of
