New Mexican (Newspaper) - October 2, 2005, Santa Fe, New Mexico Mens Vogue isnt quite honest No flipflops and no shorts Thats the extent of our office dress code So when I saw a coworker pulling off a pol ished but not precious outfit gray slacks a white shirt just worn enough not to be fussy and a flat silvercolored tie I complimented him he said I should dress like this every The he launched into a storyabout the process by which he had selected the outfit Hed learned just that morning he would be cov ering a funeral for the paper The only black pants he had were linen But they were a cotton linen blend so he thought they might do except he couldnt find an appropriately somber shirt Then his eyes lit upon the white shirt The gray pants were hanging right next to it so that worked He added the silver tie and then the piece de resis tance his favorite belt black leather with a rectan gular buckle of polished steel I love this he said patting it affectionately He told me hed gotten the belt at Van Huesen Factory Outlet I dont think that many people my age shop there because most of the stuff seems like ifs for older he said Not like middleaged but like 60 But I think there are a lot of things younger people can buy from there because they are Wow I thought Who knew men obsessed about this stuff as much as women do Conde Nast apparently The publisher just came out with a mens version of the style bible Vogue The fall edition the mag isnt yet slated for monthly publication hit newsstands Sept 6 After calling all around town I finally located a copy at Borders on Zafarano and picked it up to see if men have finally and truly been invited to the pickyourselfapartfolliclebyfollicle party Yes and no LOreal had jumped right in with an engraved invitation for men to worship at the altar of youth right alongside their womenfolk You think lines add read the text of an ad for the brands Stop Lines facial moisturizer with SPF15 She thinks lines add The ad which featured Tom Cruise or a very good lookalike invited men to Hydrate and fight wrinkles daily for younger looking skin Because newsflash guys men age and because youre worth it But the LOreal ad was one of only five skincare ads in Mens Vogue as opposed to the 17 and sev eral stories featured in the current issue of Vogue Mens Vogue tends to focus more on what men can buy Washington Post writer Peter Carlson likened it to the Sears catalog of days gone by a wish only less functional Because as Peter pointed out its pages are too slick to double as Peter didnt like it that much Who will Its targeted toward men it says so right there on the cover but what kind of men Rich men for starters Both Vogues skew toward an affluent customer but while the original has become at least margin ally more proletariat featuring ads from Target and stories about what things Vogue doesnt seem to acknowledge anyone besides multimillionaires 10 SUNDAY Oct 28 2005 The New Mexican magazine PHAEDRA HAYWOOD La fashionaria Items featured editorially included a car a watch and a platinum cell phone A reader survey card gamely asked men to indi cate their annual income level on a scale that ranged from less than per year to per yean But wheri men were asked to describe their title at work there were only5 choices Senior management Middle management Professional doctor lawyer I guess lowly employees are The men of Mens Vogue are rich and a little older and possibly gay Maybe its just me but there seemed to be a certain homoerotic undertone to the magazine There are just so many pics of hot wellgroomed young men Sure Vogue has a lot of pictures of hot well groomed young women but they tend to be por trayed as the object of a male gaze and are often photographed with men and children The men of Mens Vogue seem to exist in a sort of fraternal Atlantis populated primarily by other men Intentionally or not I could Vogue garnering a cult following among gay men the way Buffy the Vampire Slayer did among lesbians But if the Mens Vogue man is gay hes probably still in die closet The articles are distinctly macho hunting meat slicers watches worn by Musso linis commandos There are no ads for Zoloft as there are in the womens version of the magazine And there are certainly no stories about surviving cancer The Vogue man is a dandy but hes tough He cares about clothes 82 pages of clothing being on time 17 pages of watch ads and getting drank nine pages of booze Of course this is his first time out of the gate Perhaps by spring the next issue is slated to publish in March or April the Vogue man will be more evolved more vulnerable Maybe heJl worry about prostate cancer what color ribbon would that be or erectile dysfunc tion I couldnt believe there wasnt one ad for Viagra in the whole mag I told my coworker Id lend him my copy of Mens Vogue when I was done He told me how to figure out your chap size waist size plus two inches Contact Phaedra Haywood at phaywood@sfhewmexican.com Orlando Bloom Guys Face the facts on shavins By Madeleine Mart The Miami Herald Falls the perfect time for an overhaul even of your face
