   New Mexican (Newspaper) - October 2, 2005, Santa Fe, New Mexico                                VIDEOGAME REVIEWS Tunnel vision until the early morn Take a trip down virtual lane with my five favorite games Growing up I can recall numerous nights staying up until the wee hours chugging Jolt and scarfing Funyuns just to catch a peek of some latenight SMn amax movies But my mom or friends mothers always seemed to interrupt those ado lescent moments So when Mom put the ax to the cable and playing with Transformers GJ Joes and Thundercats lost their initial fun factor what was left was count less hours of gaming There were also the memorable times of ditching school just to hit the arcades or take my shot in tournaments So here are my Top 5 in no particular order with the systems I used in parenthesis Onward my fellow Samurai Shodown Neo Geo Now most people whom I knew didnt play this SNK fighting game at home but if you did then you remember the Godzillasized cartridges that fit into the ginormous console At the time gameplay was quick for stab bing and aerialslicing especially when Haohmaru pulled one of his specialty tornadoesque moves Reason Great characterbased fight ing game with quick action Could be played for hours trying to take down the entire fighting clan Favorite Ukyo a blind fighter with a swift and sleek fighting style In one word Money Mortal Kombat II SNES If you have never played this game get off your keister and go rent or buy it MidwayAkklaim made this fighting game for me and my friends If you dont believe me trying bidding against me on the three different arcadegame auctions on eBay Fatalities made this one of the first games with realistic blood and action I can remember Reason Fourforsix arcade tourna ments won Two secondplace finishes losing to my friend Mike Doc Casey and Troy Stop Playing Defense Hatchell in the finals Favorite Scorpion a masked tele porting ninja with a daggertiedtorope throwing move who would yank off his mask during his fatality and burn you with fire Dont forget the best catch phrase ever Visualize an angry Charl ton Heston voice or for you younger folk Macho Man Randy Savage Get over herer JON LECHEL Reality Bytes In two words Highest bidder Contra Up up down down left right left right B A B A select select start Now that you have 50 lives go grab a rapidfire spreadfire or rapid spreadfire gun and blow poo up in this oneor twoplayer Konami actionfight ing game Reason Left to right up to down shoot em up game that rocked the side scrolling gaming world And when you died you went rolling off the screen without hitting a single thing just to pop down from the top of the screen on your next Favorite Bangbang youre dead Now I want to see the unrealistic explo sions In three words That was easy Blades of Steel The first true hockey game besides Ice Hockey for you could fight in Made by Konami Blades gameplay and cutto fighting scenes were slow and though you could only throw jabs and upper cuts it was still rad mat you could actually fight Reason Urn let me oh yeah the fighting Favorite Seeing the small amount of blood during fights Plus I always seemed to win with the Detroit Red Wings In four words Bring it on punk 2K Football Series Sega Dream Cast OK the blather that youre spitting out right now prob ably goes along the lines of Mad den is so much What about Super Tecmo Bowl and NFLQuorterback Club was the coolest And I youre right and I dont care Segas graphics were untouchable kind of like the Christmas presents in your parents closet well at that time And since there wont be a new one anytime soon thanks to the Pills bury Dough Boy and his Madden buddies buying exclusive NFL rights it looks like its the end of the series Reason Because the Detroit Lions stunk still do in the 2K5 for PS2 like Pepe le pen And I love yelling at the screen when I lose Favorite Instant replay from any angle in slow motion In the new for mats making your Crib shine and also the Franchise mode from draft day to the Super Bowl In five words Sorry to see you go Honorable Mention The Legend qfZelda NES The Legend ofZelda Ocarina of KungFu Arcade Super Mario Kart N64 Super Tecmo Bowl Best game for college Goldeneye 007 N64 AKA Bond Contact Jon Lechel at 9953847 orjlechel@sfnewmexican.com Courtesy Photo Ukyo from Samurai Shodown 18 SUNDAY Oct 28 2005 The New Mexican magazine
