kills grandparents 5 students a teacher a security guard and himself police say By JOSHUA FREED The Associated Press BEMIDJI Minn A high school student went on a shooting rampage on an Indian reservation Monday killing his grandparents at their home and then seven people at his school grinning and waving as he fired authorities and witnesses said The suspect apparently killed himself after exchanging gunfire with police It was the nations worst school shooting since the Columbine massa cre in 1999 One student said her classmates pleaded with the gunman to stop shooting You could hear a girl saying No Jeff quit quit Leave me alone What are you doing student Son dra Hegstrom told The Pioneer of Bemidji about 20 miles south of Red Lake using the name of the suspected shooter Before the shootings at Red Lake High School the suspects grandpar ents were shot in their home and died later There was no immediate indica tion of the gunmans In addition to the scoter the death toll at the included five stu dents a teacher and a security guard FBI spokesman Paul McCabe said in Minneapolis Fourteen to 15 other students were injured McCabe said Some were being cared for in Bemidji Authori ties closed roads to the reservation in far northern Minnesota while they investigated the shootings Hegstrom described the shooter grinning and waving at a student his gun was pointed at then swiveling to shoot someone else I looked him in the eye and ran in the room and thats when I she told The Pioneer McCabe declined to talk about a possible connection between the sus pect and the couple killed at the home but Red Lake Fire Director Roman Stately said they were the grandpar ents of the gunman He identified the shooters grandfather as Daryl Lussier a longtime officer with the Red Lake Police Department and said Lussiers guns may have been used in the shootings Stately said the shooter had two handguns and a shotgun After he shot a security guard he walked down the hallway Notre Dame Uni Please see STEWART Page A5 Priest accused of 1970s abuse in Los Alamos The Associated Press ALBUQUERQUE The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Santa Fe is investigating a sexualabuse allegation against an Albuquerque priest and has placed him on paid leave The Rev Ronald Bruckner pastor of Our Lady of the Annunciation in Albu querque will remain on leave until the situation is resolved and will not exercise any public ministry in the meantime the archdiocese said in a news release The Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests or SNAP asked the archdiocese earlier this month to suspend the priest pending an inves tigation The organization said at the time that it had received information about alleged abuse that occurred in the 1970s when Bruckner was a priest in hate crime By JASON AUSLANDER The New Mexican A former Farmington oil worker charged with firstdegree murder in the killing of a gay man earlier this month in Iowa allegedly reacted violently after the victim came on to him sexu ally the mans girlfriend said Monday This is not a hate said the 22yearold woman who didnt want to be iden tified It never would have happened if her boyfriend wasnt Police in Waterloo refused to release any information about a possible motive for the killing because the investigation is still ongo ing However Capt Bruce Arends said if investiga tors find evidence of a hate crime they will include that offense in any future charges filed against 23 yearold Joseph Lawrence Jason Gage 29 of Water loo Iowa was found dead in his apartment on March 14 after police received a request to do a welfare check on him Arends said Gage a waiter at a local restaurant had been struck in the head with a wine or liquor bottle then stabbed in the neck with a piece of glass
