HOOD Texas The defense for Spc Charles Graner Jr rested its case Thursday without the accused ringleader of abuses at the Abu Ghraib prison taking the stand The jury of four Army offi cers and six senior enlisted men was expected to begin deliberating after closing arguments today Graners lawyers had indi cated earlier that Graner would probably be the final witness and he would offer his version of what occurred in a scandal that stirred out rage against the United States around the world But defense lawyer Guy Womack said the other wit nesses provided all the evi dence necessary to make the case that military and civilian intelligence agents controlled Abu Ghraib and ordered Gra ner to soften up detainees for questioning We came in with a check list of things we wanted to present to the Womack said Once we accomplished that there was no reason to Graner a 36yearold reservist from Uniontown is the first soldier to be tried on charges arising from the Abu Ghraib scandal He had appeared glum in recent days but outside court he said I feel fantastic Im still He is charged with offenses including conspiracy assault and committing indecent acts and could get years in a military prison Among other things Graner is accused of stacking naked detainees in a human pyra mid and later ordering them to masturbate while other soldiers took photographs He also allegedly punched one man in the head hard enough to knock him out and struck an injured prisoner with a col lapsible metal stick In testimony Thursday a former guard at Abu Ghraib testified that intelligence officers wanted detainees roughed up there The guard said Graner did not take part in a number of the abuses he is accused of committing But the witness former Spc Megan Ambuhl admitted under crossexamination that she had had a brief sexual relationship with Graner and remains a close friend creationism or variations thereof even though the sticker does not specifically reference any evolution Evolu tion is a theory not a fact regarding the origin of living things This material should be approached with an open mind studied carefully and critically This is a great day for Cobb County said Michael Manely an attorney for the parents who sued over the stickers Theyre going to be permitted to learn sci ence unadulterated by reli gious In a statement the school board said it was disappointed by the ruling and will decide whether to appeal A board spokesman said no decision had been made on when or if the stickers would be removed The1 textbook stickers are a reasonable and evenhanded guide to science instruction and encouraging students to be critical the board said The stickers were added after more than parents complained the textbooks presented evolution as fact
