This pencil drawing depicts a guard possibly West himself on duty overseeing Japanese internees By ANNE CONSTABLE The New Mexican t When reports reached Santa Fe during World War II that the Japa nese were beheading captured American pilots Elmer Longacre and his buddies decided to retaliate The 9yearolds crept up on the Japanese internment camp off West Alameda Street armed with sticks and stones They crawled through the weeds surrounding the chainlink fence but couldnt get inside Frustrated they went to John Gianardis house on Onate Place returned with a 22 caliber rifle and shot two rounds toward the camp Santa Fe police quickly put a stop to their caper and turned the boys over to their mothers Jerry West Artist wrote a book recollecting the war years and his fathers job at the Japanese interment camp in Santa Fc My morn gave me a Longacre a businessman and former city councilor recalled recently Aside from the children few people in the community dis cussed the Japanese internment or the camp located on the site of a Depressionera Civilian Con servation Corps CCC facility according to artist Jerry West Wests rather Hal worked as a guard at the camp in 1943 and 1944 but even he didnt talk much about those Jerry West wrote in A Local Bystanders View of the Japanese Internment Camp his recollection of the war years I do remember some offhand remarks and comments made by him Hal was always impressed by the kindness and gentleness of I he men their quiet and peaceful manner their indus During his time at the camp Hal West made a number of small studies of his fellow guards When the city dedicated a historical marker at the site of the camp in 2002 Jerry West presented copies of the sketches and his own recol lections to the Museum of New Mexico The pencil
