The name of the song is Be- Bothered and' Bewilder- ed." It is from the "Pal Joey" show and was written by Rodgers and Hart one of their many suc- cesses. Vtvienne Segal was the star of the show and only a few evenings ago I heard her sing it again effectively as she did at its open- For all those years "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered" has is Whether it be just my or rage again. Why? Just because this happens to be the silver anniversary Richard Rodgers as a songwriter? Or is it perhaps that the song is typical of the age we live in? Originally there was nothing in the song itself about, politics or In- ternational issues. It was simply a girl-and-boy song, and it was Love that bewitch- ed bothered and bewildered her and him. But whenever I iear the refrain nowadays I think of the millions of people who are bewitched, both- ered and bewildered by all the looked around me the other evening, as Viivenne Segal sang those three words, the other people in the au dience seemed to share my own feelings. They looked too serious for only a love song. Could it have been that they, too thought of something besides love when they heard those three words? Aren't we all bewitched by all those strange new ideologies that have come into our lives? Don't those sweet songs corning [out of Washington promising us 'the welfare state, a year for everybody regardless of ability, pensions for everybody, free med- sound most like the song of the Lorelei that bewitched the sailor and lured him and his boat down into the Rhine? Aren't we all bothered by high taxes, ever rising prices, housing shortages, threats of war, uncer- tainity of tomorrow, Communism and treason? Aren't we bewildered by all the contradictions and conflicting statements we are being fed, and by the fairy tales we are being; told Isn't the whole business just1 about as bewildering as Alice's Wonderland?
