On Monday the retiring officials of the county laid clown the duties of the respective offices xx'hich they have per- formed so xyell, and their successors took possession. J. Q. Annis is in- stalled clerk of court inplace of Capt. Geo. T. Gardner; H. R. Fossum, regis- ter of deeds in place of Victor Gillrup; W. C. McAclam. probate judge in place of Ileinan Biackmer, and C. Mit- chell in place of Jacob Larson, X. T. Sandberg, elected county commissioner to succeed K. Ingebrigtson. will not assume his duties until the next meet- ing of the board, which will be Feb. 5th. The city council xvill appoint a member to succeed H. C. VanYeehren. resigned. The county board met .Ian. 1st and continued in session during the week. A large amount of business was trans- acted in the usual level-headed fashion. The .STANDARD and Enterprise were declared the official papers of the coun- ty, the former to publish the financial statement and the latter the tax list and proceedings. Both papers, will, however, publish all the official pro- ceedings and notices. Wm. Christie has been reflected chairman of the board, a position he has filled with marked ability and satisfaction to the public. The salary of the county at- torney was fixed at 8900 a year, and that of the janitor at S35 per month. Mr. Took xvill continue as janitor for the present. The proceedings in full xx'ill be published in the STANDARD next week. G2.M The STAXDAUD made a visit to the 0 i county offices on Monday and found all hands industriously employed. Audi- tor Higgins and his worthy deputy. Luther Ingebrigtson, were as gracious and level-headed as usual. Treasurer Fobes and Deputy Charles were attend- ing to the numerous calls of tax-pay- ers, Sheriff Mitchell had just appointed Ex-Sheriff Larson his deputy and as w jailor, and a good pair they are to draw _ to. Clerk Annis was occupying his !y j seat with genial dignity: Judge Mc- Adam was dispensing orders in the probate office like one to the manor born, and Piegister Fossum extended his haflcl with an official grip that 1 M j showed he filled his new post with ease. j He has appointed as his deputy A. H. i 44 Peterson, a bright young man, who was for some time a clerk of Ransom Bro's. The retiring officers have prov- en faithful and popular servants of the people, and there is the best of reason to believe their successors will prove equally efficient and popular. 1 91 3 62 1 75 i i 40! I am in the 4 northern part of this territory about 3 ?7 i 45 miles north-east of Spokane Falls, so i 50 miles south of the Canadian 2 i line, and 25 miles west of the Montana w line, in xvhat is called the Hopdo Valley, xvliich is about five miles wide and ten _ miles long, hemmed with mountains and covered with pine and fir, all but a strip of tine meadow from 20 to 40 rods wide, through the center of which Hows a small stream containing the famous mountain trout, and through both valley and mountain roams herds of deer and other game. I am two miles south of the Pend Oreille river, or Clark's Fork, of the Columbia, a navigable stream on which steamers xvill be run in the near future. As far as climate is concerned, it is far ahead of Minnesota. Days are not quite so xvarm, with cold nights. Win- ters are short, lasting only from five to eight weeks, and not so se'vere. Xo cy- clones and no snoxvstorms. Here is a good chance for men looking for homes and also i'or business men to start a store and sawmill at the river. The stream running through the valley will furnish xx'uter poxver. I have seen as line xvheat raised here as anywhere, and larger and as good vegetables, cabbage heads that weighed 23 and everything in proportion. Wishing you all a happy Xexv Year, I remain.
