to a half dozen Lime Springs area farms We saw the funnel coming in from the west just after 6 oclock Franzen recalled Thursday morning I loaded the family and some people who were visiting in the car and headed down the road We were about a mile away when we saw it hit our place Just about every building on the Franzen farm suffered some damage from the twister Part of the roof of the house was blown away and both the front and back porches of the house were damaged A small shed was blown more than 20 feet across the yard and other buildings were moved slightly off their foundations A large grove of trees west of the build ings also suffered extensive damage Id heard of some of the strange things that twisters will do said but this is the first time Ive seen it happen Franzen explained how the twister picked up the livingroom rug in his house deposited broken glass and other debris on the floor and then put the rug back right where it was before the storm This was the second time in four years that a twister has hit the Franzen farm Four years ago a tornado passed through a small grove south of the buildings A twocar garage and a barn also were dam aged by the twister on the John routine of picturetaking observations and but they could sit back and let the spacecraft clock set a new record for them every passing second They were given a goahead for a sixth day in space The hours preceding the rec ord setting were mostly quiet as the astronauts slept on and off and the spacecraft sped on to ward the goal of 312 million miles Guess you know you got about three hours to go yet be fore a big event Gemini con trol said in the early hours be fore the record was broken Is that what it is Conrad asked We didnt know exactly what time it was He asked for and got the ex act time the record would be broken Gemini control suggested a way to celebrate the moment Do a couple of rolls and a loop We havent got the fuel said Conrad Then the sleepy voice of Coop er chimed in all we can do rolling and rolling and roll ing The astronauts also seemed to think they had been up quite a while It prompted this exchange with Gemini Control Conrad Gordo and I figure weve been up long be some small concern on the ground about the buildup of water in the fuel cell system The system which joins hydrogen and oxy gen to harvest electrical current produces water as a byproduct and it is stored in tanks The tanks are filling up Conrad was told that the tightest constraint from here out in the flight would be the storage space for the water Another minor concern was the hydrogen and oxygen supply remaining to keep the fuel cells going Its kind of tight said Gem ni Control but you got it there On the Gemini 5s 68th orbit Conrad reported one of the more spectacular sights of our flight It was just before sunset with the suns rays streaming from behind the spacecraft when either the hydrogen or oxygen tanks vented gas into the super cold void of space It stars looked like
