Airport in Boston reached he floor of the Massachusetts Senate the fight to defeat it was ead by a 74yearold woman Stale Sen Leslie B Cutler To her fellow senators it seemed natural that Leslie Cu tler would rise to oppose the bill for years she has been the ixpert on aviation She also it the legislatures acknowledged expert on public health During her 40 years as an elected public official Leslie utler also has become an ex longstanding pert on winning crusades p G15S oNxT BOUNCED Mr and Mrs Roy Irickle 1012 N Monroe announce the engage ment of their daughter Mary Katheryn to William John Gashel St Louis Mo son of Mrs Vernon L Gashel 808 15th NE and the late Vernon L Gashel No date has been set for the wedding The bride elect will be graduated in May from Westmar Col lege at LeMars Mr Gashel was graduated in Jan uary from the professional pilots program of Purdue University Lafayette Ind and is a pilot for Ozark Airlines One of her first crusades was lo give women an equal voice in politics In 1920 she worked in campaigns to get women to use their newly acquired right to vote Then in 1923 someone sug gested to Mrs Cutler the moth er of five children that she run batiste or dotted Swiss trimmed with lace and ruffles Recipe of the day By CECILY BROWNSTONE HOAST PORK WITH KRAUT AND APPLES Center cut 3 pounds trimmed pork loin roast Seasoning salt and paprika V4 cup chopped onion 1 pound medium red skinned cookingeating ap ples sliced thin without paring 1 can 1 pound sauerkraut Generously sprinkle entire surface of pork wilh seasoning salt Place meat in a roasting pan 13 by 8 by 2 fat side up Roast in a moderate 350 degrees oven for 1V4 hours Sprinkle top of meat with pap rika remove from pan Pour off fat from pan Sprinkle onion over bottom of pan cover with apples Drain kraut reserving juice and place kraut over ap pics Place meat fat side up over kraut Return lo the moderate yoven and continue roasting about hour longer or until meat registers 185 degree on thermometer If kraut secn dry baste several times with a little of the reserved juice Stii together the kraut apple and onion before serving Makes to 8 servings MARRIAGE Board of Health and when it passed in 1926 she was elected to a seat on it and has been a member ever since A graduate of Radcliffe Col lege Mrs Cutler decided that as a member of the Board of Health she needed more knowledge and she enrolled in a course in biology and public health at another male strong hold Massachusetts Institute of Technology After a few years of the Board of Health she said I realized many public health issues de pended upon the laws of the commonwealth So I decided Id like to make some of those laws myself Three times she was a Repub lican candidate for the Massa chusetts House of Representa tives and was beaten each time In 1938 she finally won She was given a seat on the Committee on Public Health They elected me clerk I didnt know that in those days the clerk did all the work Mrs Cutler fought unsuccess fully to gain passage of a bill to allow women to sit on juries When Mrs Cutler was elected to the State Senate in 1948 she said The Senate was up in arms It was a nice little cozy club and they didnt want a woman barging in But barge in she did and shes been there ever since She then succeeded in winning another of her long campaigns and in 1949
