Globe-Gazette (Newspaper) - January 22, 1965, Mason City, Iowa Legacy for an actor James Dean remembered By BILLWHITWORTH Ntw York Herald Service NEW YORK Its been nine years now since James Dean the name alive through meetings letter ex changes moviegoings and charity donations in Deans name One of the surprising things about the club since Deans appeal was thought to be to teenagers who identified with the roles he played is that most of the members arent teenagers now and werent teenagers at the time of Deans death A good many of them in fact are old ladies As a middleaged member said recently You have a sort of motherly feeling toward him but when you look into that beautiful handsome face you sometimes forget how old you are The boss member of Dean fandom is the president and founcor of the Memory Club Mrs Theresc J Brandes a widow of 52 who lives at 100 West 57th St in Manhattan Mrs Brandes literally has de voted her life to Dean and the club since Deans death Most of her time is given to writing earnest longhand answers to the hundreds of letters she re ceives from club members and membership applicants a task in which she is four or five years behind Though her correspondence situation looks hopeless Mrs Brandes stays after it because mail is the most important ele ment of the club Only a few of the members live in New York and the rest are widely scattered with nothing but mail to keep them in touch The lucky few members who live in New York or close enough to commute have some thing besides mail They get to attend regular meetings at Mrs Brandes 4r o o m apart ment where they can immerse themselves in the clubs collec tion of magazine articles about Dean exchange reminiscences talk to people who actually knew Dean occasionally see a Dean lookalike
