convention I have a prediction to offer This will be the last gathering of its kind that will be held in my lifetime any place other than Chicago No affront is meant to Los An geles nor is any compliment to Chicago intended Its just a matter of logic convenience and greatest good to the greatest number A GIFT brought this convention to LA But this was offset several times by the of extra cost for every visitor here on the Hotels are inadequate and inconveniently situated with re spect to the j convention hall and other strategic con j vention uses By contrast Chicago is centrally situ ated has am ple hotel facil ities and after this year in its projected Ex HALL position Park on the lakefront will have per fect convention hall facilities These considerations will out JOHN KENNEDY AND LYNDON JOHNSON THEYRE SET FOR NOVEMBER But some delegates miffed strong ti weigh by far the fun of travel incident to some remote point such as LA San Francisco Houston Philadelphia and New York A Thats a typical sizeup of the KennedyJohnson combi nation from Iowas delegates to this national Democratic nominating convention With Herschel Loveless ob viously out of contention the Hawkeye Democrats had set tled on Missouris Sen Stuart Symington as the one who would add greatest strength to the ticket in Iowa It was reported that three contacts by Loveless with nominee Kennedy during the day one not long before an nouncement of Johnsons se lection left the Iowa gover nor with the definite impres sion that it was to be Syming ton Another lowan obviously disappointed was Mason Citys Dr Sterling Barber Iowa campaign manager for Sym ington He had strongly urged the Missourian for second place after the presidential nomination went to Kennedy Kenneth Eobinson Bayard publisher is one with good reason for approving the Johnson choice He cast the half vote for the Texan on the Wednesday night roll call A farmwife delegate from North Iowa expressed regret that the delegates hadnt been taken into Kennedys confi dence and given a chance to express some choice We would probably have gone along and felt much bet ter about it she suggested Herschel will just have to work that much
