is regularly upset by the growth of our government announced re cently that car pool of a s i z e whichZ Rogers found Well it turned out that ers had made a slight and un derstandable error likely to be made by anybody subjected daily to official sedans station wagons and limousines that swarm over Washington and es pecially around Capital Hill His mistake was one of three deci mal points Actually the gov ernment owns and operates at last count something like 956 vehicles which merely makes Uncle Sam the biggest fleet operator in history MOST OF THE cars i arc Fords Chevrolets and Plym ouths The government fleet which includes trucks but no tactical military vehicles logs two billion miles Nat urally the pressure always is on to cut costs of all this touring around So government buyers next month will go out to order some of the big threes new economy cars Surprisingly enough one of the big questions is can they buy and run em any cheaper than the standard models Fords Chevrolets Corvalr and Plymouths Valiant are supposed to sell in the show room for a couple of hundred dollars less than their big broth ers But our government doesnt buy its cars out of room It buys them from the factory in lots of hundreds and iom etimes thousands SWAT THAT English Pil Lightning twoseater jet trainer looks like a huge bug as it flies over Hampshire England It is a trainer version AP transmission undercoat windshield washer outside mirrsr and even a ciga lighter Overall buys to new cars and trucks yearly When theyre worn out they are sold at auction Exceptfor special purpose cars like those used for police work the law says we cant pay more than each for sedans anc for station wagons If the seller cant meet this price theres no sale Maybe thats one reason we get such a bargain in government cars There are other reasons includ ing the fact we buy in big lots and usually at times when assembly lines arent running full THATS WHY IT is still not certain how widely the new compact cars will replace standard models in the govern ment fleet Nobody knows yet what kind of price manufac turers will offer on the smal cars Nor JOOO to hit its quota Biggest question mark in the campaign was the general soli citations section where of a goal was reported Tuesday This is just slightly over 50 per cent of the sections quota although pledge cards were issued to campaign work ers
