good friend of mine before going there my week in New Zealand last November would have been ever so much more rewarding and revealing to me The friend is Oliver Duff of Christchurch the books title New Zealand Before I begin telling you about the little 130 page volume I prob ably should explain how I come to know about Oliver Duff Our acquaintanceship goes back nine or ten years when Mr and Mrs Duff were guests in America and directed my way by mutua friends in Washington Because he was conceded to be one of New Zealands most per ceptive observers he was both editor and author he was chos en to interpret his island country to the people of America and by the same token to interpre America to the people of New Zealand It was during his time in m home Ural I learned for the firs time that his home in Christ church New Zealand is almos precisely the same distance south of the equator as Iowa is north of Mason City the equator THIS MOUSE NEEDS A peace ful maternal scene is enacted daily in the storeroom of a Los Angeles coffee shop Yes thats Baby a mother cat nursing a mouse Babys job is to keep mice out of the storeroom but the mouse squeezed in with Babys newest litter of four kittens and mom AP Wirephoto doesnt seem to mind The mouse actually is the best eater of the farmly and often lingers after the kittens have left the table Tax Talks Offer Made by Loveless But Says GOP Spurned Bid DES MOINES Gov Her About midway between equato and pole in both That gav him a special interest in a num her of our principal crops parti c ularly sugar beets and corn I re member we spent an afternoon a our beet sugar factory Ocean Makes Climate There is and I should stop here to make it clear one very pronounced difference between the country around Christchurch and in all of New Zealand for that matter which sets it apart from our Middle West The ocean is an enormously tempering in fluence there with no place more than 100 miles or so from salt water In practical fact this means the temperature extremes in New Zealand even in the southern most tip of the South Island dont even approach the temper ature extremes which to us here in North Iowa Another difference less easy of explana tion is that annual precipitation on the southern island New Zealand of course has two major islands is very much less than it is in the Mississippi Valley gen erally And this leads me to one of the things Ive learned from Oliver Duffs bookf namely that where as the South Island with Christ church as its metropolis is dedi cated to a sheep culture the North Island with Auckland and Wellington vying for honors as metropolis theres a cow culture And dont for a minute assume there isnt a pronounced aware ness of the difference on the part schel Loveless said he had asked Republican leaders of the Legisla lure to come down to his office to discuss the tax bill and revenu problems in But up to Monday the governo told his news conference the invi tation had not been accepted Loveless said the invitation was delivered by Dr Robert Johnson he governors secretary to Sen ate Republican Majority Leader D C Nolan of Iowa City last Thursday Invitation Extended Loveless said the invitation was for the majority floor leaders and presiding officers in both houses to discuss the revenue bill He said it was his understanding that Nolan was to transmit the invita tion to the other legislative lead Asked whether any other legis lators had come in to discuss the tax measure Loveless said that several including Sen X T Prentis RMount chief sponsor of the Senate version of the tax bill had talked with him but only a few Republicans had consulted with him Asked whether he would discuss revenue matters with the GOP leaders now if they asked a con ference Loveless replied 1 have never refused to RAINS CONTINUE Texas Hit by New Flooding DALLAS tf Violent weather focused its fury on south Texas and brought new flooding Monday as it raged unabated for the llth consecutive day
