Undimmed Number 70 EDITORS is one of a series of daily reports by our editor on a trip by air around the world How people live and how they feel toward America are more em phasized by Mr Hall than scenic features By W EARL HALL MEW DELHI Gandhi is on the way to be coming a member of the Hindu galaxy of ancestral gods if indeed he has not already arrived The very mention of his name pro duces an unmistakable attitude of worshipful reverence among Hin dus And Ive heard no Moslem speak ill of him One of my last acts before packing my bags for the next stop of our aerial odyssey was to visit two important in the story was the O prayer court in Delhi was s i nated the other the spot overlooking his beloved Jumna River where he DAVID BENGURION Utah Convicts End Revolt Demands Aired POINT OF THE MOUNTAIN UTah iff Rebellious convicts surrendered early Thursday the hostages and arms with which they seized and held control the Utah State Prison in a de structive night of terror Gov George D Clyde said he now wpuld consider the prison ers demands including bet ter food and shorter prison sentences The approximately 500 pris oners began filing back imo their cells and guards returned to their posts At one time 27 hostages had been held Clyde left the prison to rest after the long night of facing down the prisoners insistence that they wouldnt free their hostages until their demands were met State Highway Patrol Supt Lyle Hyatt said he was planning a cellbycell shakedown of the prison Authorities also said they would start an immediate sur vey of damage to the modern structure The hostages began filing out of the inmatecontrolled section at Billy Randall a spokesman for the convicts and seven or eight other prisoners accompanied the hostages into the administrative section One freed guard was crying Randall We were given assurance that if we turned the hostages loose no one would be actually The hos tages were freed five minutes before the promised release time of 6 The riot started in the pris on mess hall during the dinner hour Wednesday night The prisoners surged through the corridors of the detention sec tion They captured 13 members of a church basketball team in the midst of a game with the prison team four prison school teachers and at least nine prison guards They smashed windows and many of them went on a tre mendous binge of rubbing alcohol drinking An explosion in the heating plant put out the lights The hostages were not harmed however Only a short time before the hostages were surrendered the rioters had declared they would not give them up until their de mands had been met Earlier Gov Clyde had told the prisoners there would be no consideration of their griev ances until the hostages were freed Just before the end the sit uation became more lenso when the prisoners obtained guns from a guard turret in side the prison Gov Clyde said Now the hostages are free com places Gandhi W Earl Hall was cremated A Hindu guide who felt he was walking on sanctified soil took me to the Birla House which had be come Gandhis place of abode on his frequent visits to this capital city Though one of Indias richest men rich enough to have built a temple all by Birla was one of Mahatmas most faithful followers Adjacent Yard It was Gandhis custom to go into the arborsurrounded court yard at the rear of the Birla House for worship with some of his closest confidantes Then he would tarry for solitary con templation It was when arising from his crosslegged attitude of prayer that his assassin came out of the semidarkness in an ad jacent yard and fired upon him pointblank Thus ended the mortal life of the 20th Centurys greatest man of peace It was ironical that one who had never done violence to any living creature should die from an assassins bullet The murderer was tried convicted and end which never would have had the Mahatma Gandhi blessing Hindu Code Cremation for Gandhi under the Hindu code took place the next day on what was then a dismal slum area hard by the Jumna There was weeping and wailing the length and breadth of pover tystricken India The very men tion of his name still brings tears In appropriate tribute to the little man of the loin cloth the government has converted the setting for Gandhis cremation in to a spacious park Its flowers and grassy plots now bring a touch of beauty into the lites of many who once would have been catalogued as Delhis untouch ables The simple unornamented ele vated slab of cement on the spot where the Gandhi pyre orvce flamed is never without its flow ers these days Hes at least a demi god in a religion built around ancestral worship and re incarnation Wins Respect Whereas Gandhi has the rev erence and affection of the In dian man in the street Nehru has only his respect and confidence In some cases this support for the suave Nehru goes to the tent of belief that all of the worlds problems including In dias would evaporate like clew under a morning sun if only the other nations would accept Nehru leadership Nehru however is associated more with the physical well being of the Indian people than with their spiritual side He is credited with being a sincere disciple of Gandhi but not his successor One of his greatest appeals to even the most wretched Hindus is that as a rich man born lo luxury he concerns himself with the problems of those not similarly blessed Among diplomats from other countries I find this estimate of Nehru Smart to the point of being cal culatingly shrewd and much bet ter qualified to lead India in its infant days of independence than anybody else now on Ihc scene Thats one of their worries Who will succeed Nehru Israeli Would Risk Economic Disaster RatherThanGiveln UNITED NATIONS N Y UP Israel indicated Thursday it would risk
