browsing around at the famous Thailand Trade Fair have convinced me of this Hu man beings the world around are pretty much the same irrespec tive of 1 the color of their skin 2 Uieir language or religion and 3 their place of habitation From the air on our approach to Bangkok from Saigon the lighting effects on this two square mile exposition ground were the most bizarre and spec tacular Ive ever seen Neither Chicagos Century oTProgres1 nor New Yorks last worlds fair had anything to compare with it But an hour or so later when we had made our way from our recently completed a i rcondi tioned hotel the Erawan to the fairgrounds in question we dis covered that what had looked like something out of the Arabian Tales from the air was an Asian version of the Iowa State Fair with overtones of a gigantic car nival more tinsel and facade than substance Many Attractions There were shooting galleries peewee golf courses food stands loud speakers competing with each other for the attention of the happy milling masses shapely girls in bathing suits be i n g dunked by patrons armed with baseballs and best of all an occasional popcorn stand using Jumbo in Kan sas City but undoubtedly grown in Iowa Merchandise displays placed a heavy emphasis on television which only lately has come to Thailand under stale sponsorship with considerable criticism from taxpayers who believe their gov ernment could spend money on something more universally use ful than this strange medium known as Little trains filled to the guardrails tooted their way about the grounds and speed boats roared on a central lagoon European Dress It was a happy smiling fun loving crowd dressed for the most part in the European style Occasionally it was evident that my colleagues and I had attracted a bit of attention by our skin pig mentation or our American clothes but mostly we went un noticed just two more human be ings out for a good time I am prepared to say that the people of
